What is the best way to treat favism?

Favism is not common in life, so many friends have not heard of this disease. Favism generally causes anemia in patients, and in severe cases it can also affect other organs. You may want to take a look at the treatment methods for favism.

Western medicine treatment of favism

(1) Blood transfusion:

This disease is acute hemolysis and severe anemia. Blood transfusion or transfusion of packed red blood cells is the most effective treatment measure. In severe cases, blood transfusions may be required repeatedly. However, a rapid screening test for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase should be performed on the blood source to avoid blood supply from people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, which may cause the patient to suffer a second hemolysis.

(2) Adrenal cortex hormones:

The main effect is immunosuppression, so early, large-scale and short-term medication should be used.

(3) Correct acidosis:

During the hemolytic phase of favism, there is often varying degrees of acidosis. In severe cases, simple blood transfusion is ineffective and should be actively corrected. This is a key measure to rescue critically ill patients.

(4) Fluid replacement:

You should drink more water or take fluids to improve microcirculation, maintain effective blood circulation, and promote the kidney's acid and hemoglobin excretion functions. But acute renal failure should be prevented. When acute renal failure occurs, attention should be paid to maintaining water and electrolyte balance.

(5) Symptomatic treatment:

If favism is complicated by infection, hemolysis may be aggravated, and high fever, hypoxia and accelerated heart rate may lead to heart failure, so complications should be actively dealt with. Avoid using medications that may damage the kidneys.
