Saffron Grades

Saffron Grades

Saffron, also known as crocus, actually has a very good effect among medicinal materials. Due to its production problem, it is also a very precious Chinese medicinal material. Saffron is also classified into grades, such as special grade, first grade, second grade, etc. The better the saffron, the better its effect is. It can treat diseases such as amenorrhea, blood stasis and irregular menstruation in women.

1. Premium Saffron

The name of premium saffron in Iran is Negin Saffron, which is transliterated as "Negin", so it is sometimes also called Negin Saffron in China. The characteristics of premium saffron are that the filaments are long, completely red without yellow roots, the filaments are intact and not broken, and they are dry and free of impurities. Special grade saffron can basically be considered as the best quality saffron. Sometimes in China, in order to highlight its superior quality, it is also called premium saffron or top grade saffron.

2. First-grade saffron

The English name of first-grade saffron is Sargol Saffron. It is slightly inferior to premium saffron in grade. First-grade saffron is also called All Red Saffron. Its characteristics are short filaments and a lot of fragments. Although it is also all-red filaments without yellow roots, the filaments are incomplete and there are many broken pieces.

3. Secondary saffron

The English name of secondary saffron is Poushal Saffron. Its biggest feature is that the filaments are not all red, but have some yellow heads on the tails. There are many yellow heads mixed in the dark red filaments, which makes the appearance very different.

4. Grade 3 Saffron

The English name of grade three saffron is Bunch Saffron. Because it has long yellow roots and is tied into bunches, it is usually called grade three "Bunch" saffron. This type of saffron is more common in the domestic tourism market.

5. Yellow Root Saffron

Yellow root contains basically no active ingredients , so it has basically no medicinal effect and is usually used as a waste. The yellow roots of this saffron look and feel very similar to corn silk. Yellow root saffron is generally not available on the market and can only be ordered in bulk from Iranian saffron companies.

Among the above five grades of saffron, the special grade is the best quality and the yellow root is the worst. In terms of medicinal efficacy, the special grade is the best, followed by the first grade, slightly worse, and the third grade is even worse. The yellow root is the worst and has basically no efficacy.
