What are the effects and functions of Puhuang charcoal?

Puhuang charcoal can be used to treat postpartum blood stasis, retained lochia, or lower abdominal pain. Puhuang charcoal can be said to be a commonly used medicine. It can also improve hematuria, difficulty urinating, and urethral pain. It is also used to treat bloody stools or chronic colitis.

1. Used to treat postpartum blood stasis, retained lochia, and lower abdominal pain. It is often combined with Wulingzhi, such as Shixiaosan. This prescription is quite effective in promoting blood circulation, dispersing blood stasis, relieving distension and pain, and clearing lochia, and can be used as a basic prescription for removing blood stasis. It is also applicable to other bruises and pains. If bleeding occurs after delivery due to poor uterine contraction, Danshen, Paojiang charcoal, etc. can be used to stop the bleeding. The above two situations cannot remove blood stasis or stop bleeding. The role of Puhuang is mainly to contract the uterus.

2. To treat hematuria, Puhuang is a commonly used medicine, assisted by thistle, talc, etc., or combined with winter melon seeds and raw rehmannia, to treat hematuria, urinary problems and urethral pain caused by cystitis or urethritis. The prescription is Puhuang Powder.

3. For the treatment of patients with chronic colitis with bloody stools, thick blood in the stools and dull abdominal pain, you can use fried Puhuang with Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, stewed Pueraria root, stewed nutmeg, etc.

In addition, applying raw cattail pollen powder mixed with honey can treat the swelling and pain of sores.

Usage Notes:

1. Puhuang can be used raw to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, while fried to astringe and stop bleeding (but it can also stop bleeding when used raw). Generally, more raw herbs are used. For patients with bleeding and internal blood stasis, half raw and half fried can be used together.

2. Typhae pollen is suitable for treating bleeding due to excess symptoms;

3. Puhuang can contract the uterus, so pregnant women should use it with caution.

Dosage: 4.5~9g can be ground into powder and taken orally. If it is made into decoction, it is better to wrap and decoct it.

Prescription example: Shixiao Powder (Ju Fang): stir-fried Puhuang 3g, raw Puhuang 3g, stir-fried Wulingzhi 6g, grind into fine powder, boil with half water and half wine for several times, then drink.
