Why do my hands go numb when I sleep?

If you feel something when you sleep, you must be careful. It may be a symptom of some illness. If you don't pay attention, the harm can be quite serious. Generally, if you experience numbness in your hands and feet when you sleep, you may have a stroke or compression of the body's nerves.

1. Stroke

A common disease that causes numbness in the fingers is stroke. The book "Health Treasure Book: Stroke" once said: "Anyone who first feels numbness or loss of function of the thumb or index finger is likely to suffer a stroke within three years." Although numbness of the fingers does not necessarily lead to a stroke, for middle-aged and elderly people, if they often experience symptoms such as heavy head, light feet, headaches, limb numbness, and if they also have high blood pressure, high blood lipids, diabetes and other diseases, they should pay more attention and be alert to the occurrence of stroke.

2. Upper limb nerve compression

Nerve compression in the upper limbs is characterized by numbness and pain in the thumb, index finger, and middle finger, often with a history of waking up from the numbness at night, which improves after waking up and moving around. However, severe cases may be accompanied by hand muscle atrophy, affecting the fine movements of the hands. This is because the median nerve is compressed in the wrist, the so-called "carpal tunnel syndrome".

Nerve compression in the upper limbs is a numbness and pain sensation in the thumb, index finger, and middle finger

3. Cervical spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis is a common disease among middle-aged and elderly people. It is caused by compression of local blood vessels and nerve tissues in the cervical spine due to cervical bone hyperplasia, intervertebral disc degeneration or relaxation of local joint ligaments. Numbness of fingers is one of the symptoms of cervical spondylosis.

4. Diabetes

Diabetes can cause many complications, diabetic peripheral neuropathy is one of them. Once this complication occurs, there will be symptoms such as numbness in the limbs.

In addition, if the middle-aged and elderly people have poor digestion and absorption functions and malnutrition for a long time, it will cause vitamin B1 deficiency and peripheral neuritis, which will cause numbness in the fingers. If the sleeping posture is incorrect, the neck is tilted and the arms are under pressure, it may cause numbness in the fingers.
