Why does the tooth hurt after filling?

When a tooth is filled, the tooth may feel sore. There are many reasons for this symptom. For example, when the tooth is filled, the material may fall off or be damaged, which may cause this phenomenon. In addition, some of the food you eat in your daily diet is too cold, hot, sour, or sweet. At this time, the dental nerve will be overly sensitive and stimulated, which will also cause such symptoms. When filling a tooth, you must follow the doctor's advice. Do not eat hard food, or eat food that is too cold or too hot.

Four reasons for tooth pain after filling

1. The patch is missing or falling off

The defect or fall-off of filling materials after filling is more common in adjacent cavity fillings. The filling materials may fall off completely or be partially defective. The defect of the filling material may cause the tooth cavity or sensitive areas such as the pulp corner to be exposed, which will cause pain when stimulated by cold or hot food.

2. The patch is missing or falling off

First find out why the patch is missing or falling off. If the tooth tip is too long, grind it. If the tooth cavity has no retention, retention should be made and root canal retention should be used if necessary.

3. Electric current stimulation pain

Patients who experience pain from electric current stimulation feel as if they were being electrocuted. The cause of this pain is generally believed to be due to simple silver-mercury alloy filling.

4. Chemical irritation pain

Materials with chemical irritation include free monomers or unsaturated components in composite resins, carboxylic acids in glass ionomer cements, silicic acid in silicate cements, phosphoric acid in zinc phosphate cements, etc. During treatment, a pulp-soothing agent such as zinc oxide or calcium hydroxide should be inserted.

Things to note after tooth filling

1. Follow the doctor's advice and do not chew food or hard objects with the newly filled teeth. After a tooth is filled, you should generally chew food on the affected side on the 2nd or 3rd day to prevent the tooth from breaking and the filling from falling off.

2. If slight pain occurs after tooth filling, you can observe yourself first. Some slight discomfort and pain may disappear overnight. If the pain not only does not ease but worsens, or if biting pain, throbbing pain, pain from hot or cold stimulation, or spontaneous pain at night occurs, you should go to the hospital for follow-up examination and treatment in time to find out the cause and eliminate the pain.

3. For teeth with large areas of severe caries, tooth fractures are prone to occur during chewing due to insufficient resistance of the tooth itself after restoration. Therefore, after filling these teeth, the affected teeth should be protected with shell crowns in time according to the doctor's advice to prevent the crowns from breaking.
