Symptoms and dangers of high blood sugar

High blood sugar is very harmful to patients. As the disease progresses, patients will have more or less complications, and these complications tend to become more and more serious. Patients also have many common symptoms, such as dry mouth, weight loss, frequent urination, and symptoms of drinking and eating more. It has many harmful effects, especially to the eyes, and is prone to infection, heart disease, neuropathy, etc.

Symptoms of high blood sugar

1. Dry mouth and weight loss. The most common symptom of early diabetes is dry mouth and tongue. Diabetic patients still feel thirsty even after drinking a lot of water. This symptom brings great inconvenience to people's daily lives, especially at night. Some diabetic patients have to get up several times at night because they drink a lot of water, which seriously affects people's sleep quality. In the early stages of diabetes, patients will experience a significant weight loss, and they need to receive treatment immediately to control their blood sugar levels.

2. Fatigue and frequent urination. Another very obvious symptom of diabetes is fatigue and frequent urination. Diabetic patients will feel weak all over, and will have a strong sense of hunger not long after eating. Patients often sweat, and their limbs will tremble slightly during daily work and study. Diabetic patients often feel panic, irritable, and cannot control themselves to really calm down. Diabetic patients drink a lot of water, so they also produce a lot of urine.

The dangers of high blood sugar

1. Eye diseases: Most patients with diabetes mellitus lasting more than 10 years have varying degrees of retinopathy. Common diseases include iritis, glaucoma, cataracts, etc.

2. Diabetic foot: Diabetic patients suffer from foot pain, ulcers, extremity gangrene and other lesions due to peripheral neuropathy, insufficient blood supply to the lower limbs and bacterial infection, which are collectively called diabetic foot.

3. Infection: The high blood sugar level in diabetic patients is conducive to the growth and reproduction of bacteria in the body. At the same time, the high blood sugar level also inhibits the ability of white blood cells to phagocytize bacteria, thereby reducing the patient's ability to resist infection. Common infections include urinary tract infection, respiratory tract infection, skin infection, etc.

4. Heart disease: The chance of developing coronary heart disease in diabetic patients is 2 to 3 times that of non-diabetic patients. Common symptoms include heart enlargement, heart failure, arrhythmia, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, etc.

5. Neuropathy: Under high blood sugar conditions, nerve cells and nerve fibers are prone to lesions. The clinical manifestations are spontaneous pain, numbness, and decreased sensation in the limbs. Some patients experience local muscle weakness and atrophy. Autonomic dysfunction manifests itself as diarrhea, constipation, urinary retention, impotence, etc.

6. Ketoacidosis: Diabetic ketoacidosis often occurs when insulin-dependent diabetes is untreated, treatment is interrupted, or there is stress. Diabetic patients have a severe lack of insulin, which accelerates fat decomposition and produces a large amount of fatty acids. A large amount of fatty acids enter the liver for oxidation, and the concentration of their intermediate metabolites, ketone bodies, in the blood increases significantly, while the utilization of ketone bodies by extrahepatic tissues is greatly reduced, leading to hyperketonemia and urinary ketone bodies.
