What are the symptoms of pathological vomiting?

What are the symptoms of pathological vomiting?

Spitting up milk is possible and it is normal to spit up milk occasionally. However, if the baby spit up milk frequently and often spits out milk lumps and mucus, such symptoms are abnormal. It may be due to indigestion of the food eaten, or the milk is too cold or too irritating. These reactions should be considered to be caused by pathological factors.

  Symptom 1: Vomiting milk lumps

Spitting up symptoms:

Within 3 months, the baby's stomach is in a horizontal position, making it easy to store milk. Moreover, the stomach capacity is very small. The baby's stomach can only hold 12 taels of milk in more than 10 days after birth. Even with this 12 taels of milk, it takes about 23 hours to empty the stomach, so it is more reasonable to feed once every 3 hours or so. If the baby is fed too frequently, it will inevitably affect the amount of milk taken in at the next meal or cause stomach bloating. Some of the milk taken in at the previous meal will remain in the stomach and, combined with stomach acid, may cause milk lumps to be vomited out.

Solution:

Use feeding positions that control milk flow

Some new mothers like to breastfeed while lying down. This face-to-face side-lying breastfeeding posture will increase the possibility of the baby spitting up milk. If the baby is held, his body is tilted. When the baby's body is tilted at about 45 degrees, the lower opening of the stomach will have a certain tilt accordingly. The inhaled milk can partially flow into the small intestine due to gravity, making part of the stomach empty. Therefore, you can hold the baby up when feeding and let him lie in your arms with his head facing up. The new mother can support the baby's back with one hand in a scissors shape, and use the thumb and other four fingers of the other hand to place the upper and lower parts of the breast to support the entire breast for feeding. When the milk flow is fast, you can pinch the breast with the thumb and index finger to control the milk flow rate.

Don't rush to put your baby down after feeding

The mother should not put the baby back to bed immediately. Instead, you should hold the baby upright against the chest, with his head resting on the adult's shoulder, and pat his back gently to expel the air swallowed while sucking milk, which is to make the baby burp. The gas staying in the stomach and occupying a certain space is an important factor causing the baby to spit up milk. After the baby burps and the gas in the stomach is emptied, put the baby down gently and lie on his side. This can reduce spitting up and reduce the risk of spitted up milk being aspirated into the respiratory tract.

Symptom 2: Vomiting everything after eating

Spitting up symptoms:

When a baby cries or sucks while feeding, he or she often inhales a lot of air. The gas stays in the stomach and forms bubbles. After breastfeeding, as the baby's body moves or is turned over (such as when bathing him or changing his diaper), the air in the baby's stomach will rise and run out of the trachea. The baby's stomach muscles are also weak, and the neural regulation function that controls the stomach is not mature enough, which means that the baby cannot burp and cannot expel the air in the stomach. In addition, the entrance of the stomach is loose but the exit is tight. If too much milk is fed at one time, the milk will run out along with the air.

Solution:

Don't feed your baby immediately after he cries.

If the baby cries for too long before feeding, he may inhale more air into his stomach while crying, which makes it easy for milk to regurgitate. If you pat his back and help him pass the gas before feeding, the situation will improve.
