What causes thin veins?

The appearance of thin veins is a person's subjective feeling. In addition, this is closely related to individual differences. For example, if a person is fat, it is more difficult to find veins during medical examinations or treatments, which will give people a misunderstanding that the veins are thin. Generally, this is not a disease and there is no need to worry too much, and it will not have an adverse effect on your health.

What causes thin veins?

1. If no blood vessels can be found when drawing blood from an adult, it generally means that the person is obese. For adults who are slightly overweight, thin, or have a normal body mass index, there should not be much difference in the thickness of their blood vessels. The way to make your blood vessels relatively thicker is to exercise (especially the upper limbs) and lose weight.

2. The superficial veins of adults are basically the same and not too thin, otherwise there will be problems with blood return and circulation. I have not seen any academic paper reporting that the superficial veins of an adult are very thin. The reason why people usually think that the blood vessels are too thin is mainly because some people's veins are located deeper under the skin and do not look obvious in appearance, so they are mistakenly thought to be "too thin".

Function

There are venous valves on the walls of the veins, especially in the veins of the lower limbs, which are more numerous and well developed. They can prevent blood from flowing back and allow blood to flow toward the heart. However, the large veins in the abdominal cavity, such as the portal vein and the superior and inferior vena cava, do not have venous valves, and venous blood return may be affected by the high or low intra-abdominal pressure.

Structural features: 1. Small branches merge into large branches, and the diameter gradually becomes thicker.

2. The venous walls are thin and there are many venous valves in the cavity. 3. The systemic circulation veins are divided into deep and superficial veins. The deep veins often run along with the arteries, while the superficial veins are located in the superficial fascia. 4. There are abundant anastomotic branches between the veins, forming a venous plexus. 5. The veins in the brain are quite special, most of them are dural sinuses or cerebral veins. 6. The veins throughout the body can be divided into two parts: pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation.

The traditional treatment for varicose veins of the great saphenous vein is surgical ligation, removal, or sclerotherapy, which involves injecting an irritating drug into the great saphenous vein under ultrasound guidance to occlude it. However, surgical ligation has a 10% failure rate and requires conventional anesthesia and two weeks of recovery. Sclerotherapy results in recanalization of the great saphenous vein in approximately 50% of patients, but symptoms recur several years later.
