What causes cold pain in the calves

Cold and painful feet and legs are quite common in life. Coldness indicates poor circulation, and pain may be caused by excited leg muscles, which leads to muscle spasms. There are many reasons for this. The most common one is excessive fatigue during the day, which leads to such phenomenon in the calf muscle tissue. In addition, cold weather or calcium deficiency in the body may also cause such phenomenon.

What causes cold pain in the calves

(1) Fatigue:

Excessive leg exercise or excessive force during the day causes fatigue, the muscle tension is not improved at night, and excessive metabolic products are not metabolized in time, and its stimulation can cause calf cramps.

(2) Cold:

Cold feet and legs can cause leg muscle cramps during sleep.

(3) Hypocalcemia:

When hypocalcemia occurs in the body, the excitation threshold of the neuromuscular junction is lowered, and the neuromuscular junction can be excited even at a stimulation intensity lower than normal, which can easily cause abnormal contraction and cause calf cramps. This condition is more common in pregnant women and the elderly who are calcium deficient.

(4) Blood flow factors: For patients with varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis in the legs, if they maintain a certain posture for a long time while sleeping, the leg veins will be compressed and blood flow will be blocked, causing blood stasis. When the blood stasis reaches a certain level, it will cause leg muscle spasms.

What to do with cold calf pain

① Pay attention to supplementing calcium and vitamin D. You can take calcium tablets or eat calcium-rich foods such as dried shrimps, milk, and soy products. ② Strengthen physical exercise and do sufficient warm-up exercises during exercise to make the body move. This will help the blood circulation in the lower limbs to be smooth, and you can avoid leg cramps when participating in various intense sports or competitions. ③ Pay attention to keeping warm and prevent local muscles from getting cold.

There are many reasons for calf cramps during sleep at night. No matter what causes calf cramps, they will cause discomfort or pain and affect normal sleep. Therefore, we must pay enough attention to eliminate factors that can cause calf cramps, such as keeping warm when sleeping and massaging the lower limbs. If the attacks occur frequently, you should go to the hospital for medical treatment, find out the cause and seek early treatment.
