What to do if there is white stuff in your toenails

If there is white stuff inside the toenails, the most common cause is onychomycosis. Onychomycosis refers to a fungal infection that causes nail lesions. First, it will cause the nail color to change, becoming gray, yellow, or even black. It will also make the nails particularly thick, uneven, and particularly fragile. At this time, fungicidal treatment must be carried out. You can use some topical and oral medications for treatment.

What to do if there is white stuff in your toenails

1. Among various skin ringworm diseases, onychomycosis is the most stubborn and difficult to treat. You should have enough patience when treating onychomycosis. Some comrades, in a desperate attempt to achieve quick results, believed in folk remedies and soaked their feet in highly irritating liquids such as industrial vinegar and glacial acetic acid. This not only failed to achieve good results, but was also likely to cause other skin diseases. 2. The traditional method of treating onychomycosis is mainly external treatment. One method is to remove the onychomycosis through surgery and allow a new nail to grow back. When using this method, attention should be paid to the disinfection of the toes to prevent secondary infection of the new nail plate due to slow elimination of the fungus, which may cause recurrence of onychomycosis. 3. Another way to treat onychomycosis is to use topical antifungal drugs. Apply 5% iodine tincture topically and use antifungal ointment. This onychomycosis treatment is simple and easy, but because the nails grow very slowly, in order to ensure that the new nail plate is not infected by fungi, continuous application of medicine is required for 6-9 months. In addition to external treatment, oral antifungal drugs can also be used to treat onychomycosis.

The five typical symptoms of onychomycosis are as follows:

1. Proximal subungual type: less common, mostly secondary to paronychia. The symptoms of this type of onychomycosis are that the nail plate near the nail wrinkle (i.e. the proximal end of the nail plate) turns white, then gradually expands into spots, and finally the partial nail plate is lost and expands to the entire nail. This type is caused only by Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton rosea. 2. Distal subungual type: The initial symptoms of onychomycosis are irregular small white spots appearing on the nail plate surface at the distal end (or lateral edge), which then turn into dull gray spots and gradually turn into yellow-brown and finally black. Soon the nail plate deteriorates, keratinous debris accumulates under the nail, and the nail bed thickens. Finally, the nail plate becomes atrophic and occasionally bleeds. This type is often caused by red, gypsum or flocculent Epidermophyton.

3. Pan-onychial dystrophy type: This is not uncommon and is often the final development result of the above types. The symptoms of onychomycosis include loss of luster, deterioration, thickening or crumbling of the entire nail, and leaving behind an abnormally thickened nail bed after falling off. 4. White superficial type: commonly seen on toenails. The symptoms of onychomycosis are white spots or white patches with a diameter of 1 mm on the surface of the nail plate. The diseased nails are brittle and tend to scrape off. This type is only caused by Trichophyton gypseum or Trichophyton, Fusarium and Aspergillus. 5. Chronic paronychia type: The symptoms of onychomycosis are degeneration or browning of the lateral nail folds, proximal nail folds, and the nail plate under the epidermal membrane. The most important feature is the presence of paronychia, swelling of the periungual folds without subungual hyperkeratosis, and a small amount of exudate but never pus. This type is also often caused by Candida albicans.
