Role of bladder instillation

Intravesical chemotherapy is a type of intracavitary chemotherapy. First, a catheter is inserted into the bladder through the urethra, and then the chemotherapy drugs are injected into the bladder. The chemotherapy drugs are retained in the bladder for 1/2 to 2 hours. During the drug retention period, the patient should try to soak all the bladder mucosal epithelium in the chemotherapy drugs. Regular turning over (prone, supine, left or right side lying, and sitting) can be adopted. Once the retention time is up, you should empty your urine immediately and drink plenty of water.

Intravesical instillation is an effective method for preventing recurrence of bladder transitional cell carcinoma after surgery. The chemotherapy drugs used for bladder cancer instillation include thiochalotrimazole, mitomycin C, etc., and the commonly used biological agents include BCG, interferon, and interleukin-2. Combination therapy can utilize the different mechanisms of action of different drugs to improve efficacy and reduce toxic side effects.

Side effects after bladder instillation

After bladder instillation, most patients may experience mild digestive tract symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Patients should be advised to eat easily digestible, highly nutritious, high-vitamin foods and fresh vegetables and fruits, drink plenty of water, quit smoking and drinking, avoid spicy and other irritating foods, and keep bowel movements open.

Therefore, patients should pay attention to their diet when using infusion treatment. Early bladder cancer patients should eat more foods that have the effects of enhancing the body's immunity and resisting lung cancer, such as coix seed, yam, jujube, astragalus, American ginseng, etc.; those with cough and phlegm should eat ginkgo, almonds, orange peel, etc.; those with early bladder cancer should eat foods that reduce the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy: mushrooms, longan, etc. In addition, many Chinese medicines have the effect of enhancing immunity. Therefore, you can also rely on taking Chinese medicines that have the effect of nourishing the spleen and kidneys.
