Traditional Chinese medicine is a relatively conservative treatment. Our general treatment methods include both Chinese and Western medicine. Western medicine has certain risks. Traditional Chinese medicine also has risks, but the probability is relatively low. Urticaria can be treated through traditional Chinese medicine, but urticaria in traditional Chinese medicine must also be dialectical, because it has certain causes. So what is urticaria called in traditional Chinese medicine?

Urticaria: The clinical manifestations are wheals of varying sizes with no fixed location, sudden onset, rapid subsidence, severe itching, and no trace left after healing.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that wind evil is the main cause of urticaria, which can be divided into the following five types of syndrome differentiation.

Yin-blood deficiency type urticaria: This type of urticaria patients often have itchy skin with pale color, and may also experience dizziness, depression, dull pain in the ribs, red tongue and dry mouth, and thin and stringy or rapid pulse. The treatment of urticaria should focus on nourishing the blood and softening the liver.

Medicinal uses: Toosendan fruit, mulberry leaves, raw rehmannia root, red peony root, tribulus terrestris, angelica, wolfberry, chrysanthemum, fried green peel with vinegar, etc.

Liver-kidney yin deficiency type urticaria: This type of urticaria patients have irregular onset of disease, with scattered and irregular attacks, red cheeks, dizziness, stiff waist and weak knees, irritability, night sweats, red tongue, and thin and rapid pulse. The treatment of urticaria should focus on strengthening water and containing wood.

Medicinal uses: Chinese yam, processed Polygonum multiflorum, raw rehmannia, moutan bark, phellodendron, red peony root, yam pulp, roasted tortoise shell, astragalus, raw oyster, etc.

Chong and Ren disharmony type urticaria: This type of urticaria patients are mostly women. It often worsens before or during menstruation and may recur, and disappears after menstruation. The disease is accompanied by chest and breast pain, abdominal pain, irritability, irregular or scanty menstruation, thin tongue coating, stringy pulse, and dull complexion. The treatment of urticaria should focus on regulating Chong and Ren meridians.

Medicinal uses: raw rehmannia, white peony root, peach kernel, processed cyperus rotundus, safflower, ligusticum chuanxiong, angelica. Patients with urticaria caused by excessive menstruation can remove peach kernel, safflower, and rutabaga seed, and add roasted black ginger, roasted licorice, and lindera stalk; if there is swelling in the chest and breasts and tenderness of tuberculosis, add bupleurum and Shixiaosan; if there is severe abdominal pain, add Corydalis yanhusuo and Corydalis yanhusuo.

Qi and blood deficiency type urticaria: This type of urticaria is mostly seen in weak patients. The wheals are light or white in color, and slightly red when scratched. The disease recurs repeatedly and does not heal over the years. It is aggravated by fatigue, with a pale face, poor appetite, fatigue, drowsiness, thin and moist tongue coating, and a moist and thready pulse. The treatment of urticaria is mainly to regulate qi and blood.

Medicinal uses: raw astragalus, white atractylodes, codonopsis, angelica, roasted licorice, costusroot, longan pulp, white peony root, raw rehmannia, powdered moutan bark, etc.
