Thyroid colloid retention

Thyroid colloid retention

Thyroid disease is a common medical problem. Enlarged and swollen thyroid gland. Thyroid colloid retention is a serious disease symptom, and when the disease occurs, it becomes thyroid cyst disease. It is more likely to happen especially to older people. If this disease occurs, it must be treated promptly, otherwise lesions, multiple cysts, or even tumors will occur, which will endanger life and health. What is thyroid colloid retention?

The thyroid gland is filled with follicles, and the follicular cavity is filled with colloid. Any factor that affects the synthesis and transport of thyroid follicular colloid may lead to thyroid colloid retention, including genetic and environmental factors.

Colloid retention is common in benign nodules. The typical ultrasound manifestation is a strong echo inside the nodule with a "comet tail" sign behind it. Sometimes the manifestation is atypical and can be confused with calcification within the nodule.

What are cystic nodules?

Thyroid nodules can be cystic or solid. When a nodule has both cystic and solid components, we call it a cystic-solid nodule. Among cystic and solid nodules, benign nodules are the majority.

What is a thyroid adenoma?

Thyroid adenoma is a benign tumor originating from thyroid follicular cells and is the most common benign tumor of the thyroid gland. There are many clinical types of adenomas, among which follicular adenoma is the most common, often appearing as a single well-defined nodule in the thyroid gland with a complete capsule. Some may develop into functional autonomous adenomas, causing hyperthyroidism.

What are the ultrasound characteristics of typical malignant nodules?

Typical malignant nodules usually appear as solid nodules with low or very low echoes on ultrasound, which may be accompanied by suspicious ultrasound features such as rough edges, calcification (especially microcalcification), and vertical growth (especially in nodules <1 cm).
