Formaldehyde is a chemical raw material and a toxic substance. It poses a great threat to human health. If you are exposed to formaldehyde for a long time, it can cause hair loss in serious cases. Especially if you have newly renovated your home, you must test for formaldehyde. Only when the formaldehyde level is lower than the standard can you move in to avoid harm to your health. Once you are exposed to formaldehyde, it is not just a problem of hair loss.

What harm does formaldehyde do to the human body?

1. Stimulating effect:

The main hazard of formaldehyde is its irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. Formaldehyde is a protoplasmic toxic substance that can combine with protein. When inhaled in high concentrations, it can cause severe respiratory irritation and edema, eye irritation, and headaches.

2. Sensitization:

Direct skin contact with formaldehyde can cause allergic dermatitis, pigmentation, and necrosis, while inhalation of high concentrations of formaldehyde can induce bronchial asthma. Regular inhalation of small amounts of formaldehyde can cause chronic poisoning, resulting in mucosal congestion, skin irritation, allergic dermatitis, keratosis and fragility, and pain in the nail beds and fingertips. In addition, long-term exposure to low doses of formaldehyde can cause chronic respiratory diseases, nasopharyngeal cancer, colon cancer, brain tumors, menstrual disorders, gene mutations in the cell nucleus, intra-strand cross-linking of DNA and cross-linking of DNA with proteins, inhibition of DNA damage repair, pregnancy syndrome, chromosomal abnormalities and leukemia in newborns, and memory and intellectual decline in adolescents.

3. Mutagenic effect:

High concentrations of formaldehyde are also a genotoxic substance. Experimental animals may develop nasopharyngeal tumors if they inhale high concentrations in the laboratory.

4. Outstanding performance:

Headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, chest tightness, eye pain, sore throat, poor appetite, palpitations, insomnia, weight loss, memory loss and autonomic nervous system disorders, etc.; among all those exposed, children and pregnant women are particularly sensitive to formaldehyde, and the harm is greater. Long-term inhalation by pregnant women may cause newborn malformations or even death. Long-term inhalation by men may cause sperm deformity, death, decreased sexual function, and severe cases may lead to leukemia, pneumothorax, and lack of reproductive ability. Systemic symptoms include headache, fatigue, poor appetite, palpitations, insomnia, weight loss and autonomic nervous system disorders, etc.
