Can I feed my newborn baby if he hiccups?

Can I feed my newborn baby if he hiccups?

Newborns will hiccup before they are born. After they are born, they sometimes inhale too much air while feeding, causing gas to rise and cause hiccups. If the baby has hiccups, you can hold him upright and pat his back gently to expel excess air, or you can feed him milk to let the air go down and the hiccups will stop! When breastfeeding, you must pay attention to the breastfeeding posture.

The baby starts to hiccup when it is still in the mother's belly, and it is still prone to hiccups even after birth. Some babies hiccup a lot, while others hiccup very rarely. Some babies need help with hiccups, while others can handle them on their own. So, can you feed your baby when he is hiccuping?

Can I feed my baby when he hiccups?

Hiccups are a common symptom in newborns. Most babies will hiccup from time to time, and some will even hiccup while in their mother's belly. Hiccups are caused by spasms in the diaphragm, the cup-like muscle that surrounds the stomach and lungs. As the stomach expands, it causes the diaphragm to spasm, thus causing the baby to hiccup. So when children hiccup, it is because the digestion and absorption function of the stomach is not yet perfect. There is no need to worry, this is a normal phenomenon. It may also be because the baby inhaled air while feeding. Just hold the baby upright after feeding and gently pat his back for a while and he will be fine. You can also feed the baby hot milk, which can relieve hiccups.

How to prevent your baby from hiccups

1. If the hiccups and milk regurgitation are caused by "gastroesophageal reflux", you can let the baby stand upright on an adult's shoulder to pass gas after feeding, and do not let the baby lie flat within half an hour. After 4 months old, you can add rice flour or wheat flour to increase the viscosity of the milk to prevent hiccups.

2. If your baby hiccups because of an allergy to milk protein, you can use special formula milk as directed by your doctor.

3. Normally, feed your baby in a quiet state and environment. Never feed your baby when he is too hungry or crying loudly.

4. The feeding posture should be correct, and avoid eating too hastily, too fast, too cold, or too hot.

5. When your baby hiccups, you can use toys or soft music to divert and attract the baby's attention to reduce the frequency of hiccups.

  1. Let your baby take a break in the middle of feeding, let your baby stand upright on your legs, gently pat his back to pass gas, and burp after he is full to avoid continuous hiccups.
