The milk comes out with blood

The nutrients needed by a newborn's body mainly come from breast milk, so the health of breast milk directly determines the health of the child. However, in daily life, some mothers' milk will contain a little blood. This situation will definitely make parents panic. There are many reasons for this situation. The key is to figure out the situation as soon as possible and restore your milk supply to normal.

Nipple injury, vascular dilation or hyperplasia, and epithelial cell hyperplasia, such as breast development during pregnancy, are the most common causes of blood in breast milk. If breast bleeding persists, it should be checked by a doctor. In principle, blood in breast milk is harmless to the baby.

Nipple injury: Broken nipples are traumatic and blood will mix into the milk during the baby's sucking process.

Countermeasures: Open nipple wounds are a portal of entry for various types of pathogens that may lead to mastitis. If the symptoms are mild, you can apply lanolin ointment to protect the nipples. If the situation is serious, it is recommended to temporarily stop breastfeeding. During this period, carefully express the milk by hand or with a breast pump to prevent milk accumulation.

To avoid nipple injury, it is important to remove the nipple correctly when the baby has not yet spontaneously released the breast. You can carefully place a finger inside the corner of your baby's mouth and press the jaw down to open a tightly closed mouth. The nipple should not be pulled out of the baby's mouth while the baby is still sucking.

Vascular dilation During pregnancy, the breasts develop, the mammary ducts grow rapidly, and the blood vessels dilate or proliferate, leading to bleeding, and blood mixing into the breast milk. This situation will not affect the baby's breastfeeding. It will usually get better soon and the mother can continue to breastfeed. If it persists for a long time, be sure to consult a professional doctor to rule out pathological problems.

Blood in breast milk without obvious nipple trauma

Damage to capillaries sometimes occurs when the breasts are hit or injured, or when the mother uses a breast pump with too much force, damaging the capillaries, which can lead to bleeding and blood in the breast milk.

Countermeasure: Use the breast pump correctly. A bra that is too big or too small will not only reduce the efficiency of milk suction, but also cause nipple pain due to friction. Therefore, you should choose a bra of appropriate size so that the nipples can move forward and backward easily during milk suction and have appropriate bridging to achieve sufficient stimulation. The force of using an electric breast pump should also be increased gradually from weak to strong.

Intraductal milk

Capitula refers to a benign tumor occurring in the ductal epithelium, and its incidence is second only to breast fibroadenoma and breast cancer. Sometimes small papillomas growing in the mammary ducts will bleed into the breast milk, and the nipples will have bloody, serous, or serous discharge, which may be continuous or intermittent. Some patients experience discharge when squeezing their breasts, while others accidentally find discharge stains on their underwear or bras. Some patients may experience pain or inflammation. Because intraductal papilloma is small, in most cases no lump can be felt during clinical examination. In some central papillomas, nodular or cord-like lumps may be felt near the areola. The lumps are soft in texture and can produce fluid when lightly pressed.
