Calcium deficiency is very common in newborns, but it is not advisable to supplement calcium for them within 20 days of birth because it is not easy to absorb at this time, and some calcium supplements may even cause certain harm to their health. A newborn baby who is 20 days old will generally experience symptoms such as waking up easily at night and crying, abnormal temperament, night sweats, and baldness on the back of the head. Parents should pay attention if they find related symptoms. 1. Condition Analysis Generally speaking, we do not supplement calcium for newborns in the first 20 days. We only give them vitamin AD or D3. Of course, if some children show symptoms of low calcium. For example, if a child is easily excitable and the blood calcium concentration is lower than 1.8 mmol per liter or the free calcium is lower than 0.9 mmol per liter, it can be diagnosed as hypocalcemia. When this happens, calcium supplementation is necessary. The commonly used methods of calcium supplementation are oral calcium gluconate or intravenous injection of calcium gluconate, but these must be done under the guidance of a doctor, and parents cannot take the medicine on their own! 2. Symptoms of calcium deficiency in 20-day-old newborns 1. Difficulty falling asleep, restless sleep, easy waking up at night, and crying are one of the manifestations of calcium deficiency in newborns. Usually, newborns with calcium deficiency will suddenly wake up and cry. 2. Night sweats, profuse sweating on the head after falling asleep, and more obvious sweating after crying. 3. Abnormal temperament. Babies with calcium deficiency will have strange tempers, be irritable and cry a lot. 4. Baldness on the back of the head: Newborns with calcium deficiency are prone to sweating. Usually the hair on the back of the head is worn away, forming a baldness on the back of the head. This can reflect a partial calcium deficiency but it is not an absolute situation. In severe cases of calcium deficiency, the abdominal wall muscles may cause relaxation of the intestinal wall muscles, causing gas accumulation in the intestinal cavity and abdominal distension. If the tendons of the spine are loose, pigeon chest and sternum pain may occur. In newborns with calcium deficiency, the cartilage of each rib may proliferate and be connected like beads, which compress the lungs and easily cause poor ventilation and bronchitis and pneumonia. It may also manifest as poor mental state, loss of appetite, lack of interest in the surrounding environment, convulsions, decreased immune function, etc. |
