What are the symptoms of vitamin C deficiency

Everyone knows that vitamins are an indispensable nutrient for the human body, and vitamin C is a very important one among them. Vitamin C is contained in many fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C is well known for its functions in promoting skin whitening and bone growth. We on land can usually get enough vitamin C, but people at sea often suffer from vitamin C deficiency. Do you know what symptoms of vitamin C deficiency occur?

  1. General deficiency

Vitamin C deficiency does not show symptoms immediately. Most of the symptoms begin to appear slowly after 3 to 4 months of deficiency. The first symptoms are: decreased appetite, listlessness, pale complexion, fatigue and weakness, and fatigue of beef cattle. Children who are deficient in vitamin C may experience irritability, poor weight gain, and may also have symptoms such as low-grade fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.

  2. Bleeding disorders

Vitamin C is called ascorbic acid. This type of vitamin can act on cells in the human body, increase the viscosity of the intercellular matrix, and maintain cell integrity. If it is lacking for too long, it will cause the viscosity of the intercellular matrix to decrease and the permeability of the cell wall to increase. The most intuitive manifestation is the increased permeability of the blood vessel wall, which makes it easy for blood to outflow and cause scurvy. The main manifestations are: loose and falling teeth in the mouth, swollen, bleeding, and ulcerated gums, frequent nosebleeds, congestion of the inner membrane of the eyes, and occasionally gastrointestinal bleeding, hematuria, intracranial hemorrhage and other diverse bleeding diseases.

  3. anemia

The main symptom of vitamin C deficiency is extensive bleeding. Long-term deficiency will lead to excessive blood loss and anemia. Vitamin C deficiency will also affect the absorption of the mineral iron, leading to a decrease in the body's hematopoietic function. In the late stage of vitamin C deficiency, severe anemia will occur, with pale complexion as the main external manifestation.

  4. Bone lesions

Vitamin C deficiency leads to collagen synthesis disorder, resulting in poor formation of bone organic matter and causing osteoporosis. In children, a prominent feature is that the ends of long bones are rod-shaped, causing pain during joint movement, and the children often keep the knee joint in a flexed position.
