Narrow cortex: The endocortex is special, consisting of two layers, separated by two layers of thin-walled cells, with obvious Caspian spots. The pericycle consists of one row of thin-walled cells. The phloem is wide and sieve tube groups are visible. The cambium is ring-shaped. There are fewer xylem vessels, which are arranged radially. The medulla is small. The thin-walled cells of this product contain starch granules and calcium oxalate clusters.

Powder characteristics: rhizome powder is light yellow-brown. There are numerous starch granules. Single granules are round with a diameter of 3-17 μm. The hilum is dot-shaped, fissure-shaped or bird-shaped, and the stratification is not obvious. Compound granules are composed of 2-4 sub-granules. The diameter of the scalariform and reticulate vessels is 7-30μm. The diameter of calcium oxalate cluster crystals is 20-30μm. In addition, there are cork cells and non-lignified parenchyma cells.

[Identification] For physical and chemical identification, take 1g of crude powder of this product, add 20ml of ethanol, reflux for 15min, filter, and use the filtrate for the following tests: (1) Take 1ml of the filtrate, add a small amount of sodium nitrite and about 1ml of sulfuric acid, the solution will turn red.

(2) Add 1-2 drops of 1% ferric chloride ethanol solution to 1 ml of the filtrate. The solution will turn blue-green.

(3) Take 4 ml of the filtrate and evaporate it to dryness in an evaporating dish. Add 1 ml of acetic anhydride to dissolve it. Add 1 drop of concentrated sulfuric acid along the wall of the evaporating dish. It will first turn purple-red and then green.
