What is Liver Yang Hyperactivity Syndrome?

In traditional Chinese medicine, many diseases have the same symptoms as those in Western medicine, but they are different in terms of name and treatment methods. Take liver disease for example, hyperactivity of liver yang is the name of a disease in traditional Chinese medicine. In terms of treatment, Chinese medicine is definitely the main treatment, and how to combine the medicines still depends on the doctor. So, what kind of disease is liver yang hyperactivity syndrome?

Liver Yang Hyperactivity Syndrome is the name of a disease in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It refers to the symptoms of upper body fullness and lower body emptiness due to liver-kidney yin deficiency and liver yang hyperactivity. It is also known as liver yang rising, excessive liver yang.

Causes

Injuries caused by anger can cause qi stagnation to turn into fire, and the heat can consume the yin of the liver and kidneys. Or injuries caused by sexual overwork or kidney yin deficiency due to old age can cause water to fail to contain wood, and the liver wood loses its vitality.

Pathogenesis

It is mostly due to liver and kidney yin deficiency, in which yin cannot contain yang, resulting in excessive rise of liver yang; or due to depression, anger, and anxiety, which cause qi stagnation to turn into fire, consume yin and blood, and in which yin cannot control yang.

Key points of syndrome differentiation

Dizziness, bloating and pain in the head, heavy head and light feet, soreness of waist and knees, red tongue with little fluid, and wiry or fine and stringy pulse.

Governing Law

Calms the liver and suppresses yang, nourishes yin and clears fire.

Commonly used Chinese medicine

Gastrodia elata, Uncaria rhynchophylla, Semen Cassiae, Eucommia ulmoides, Achyranthes bidentata, Viscum album, Leonurus japonicus, Scutellaria baicalensis, Polygonum multiflorum, Poria cocos, Gardenia jasminoides.

Common diseases

1. Hyperactivity of liver yang and internal movement of liver wind

Clinical manifestations: dizziness, unsteady gait, shaking head and limbs, slurred speech, and even sudden fainting, crooked mouth and eyes, and hemiplegia. Concomitant symptoms include hyperactivity of liver yang, headache, irritability, numbness of limbs and stiffness of neck. The tongue is red or has a greasy coating, and the pulse is stringy, thin and strong.

Treatment method: Calm the liver and extinguish wind.

Commonly used prescription: modified antelope horn soup.

Commonly used Chinese medicine: antelope horn, mulberry root bark, akebia, inula, cycad, cimicifuga, and poria.

2. Hyperactivity of liver yang and deficiency of liver and kidney yin

Clinical manifestations: dizziness, forgetfulness, tinnitus, insomnia, dry throat and mouth, soreness of waist and knees, pain in the ribs, fever in the five parts of the body, red cheeks and night sweats, spermatorrhea in men, scanty menstruation or amenorrhea in women, red tongue with little coating, and thready and rapid pulse.

Treatment method: Nourish the liver and kidneys.

Commonly used prescriptions: Qiju Dihuang Pills with added ingredients.

Commonly used Chinese medicine: wolfberry, chrysanthemum, rehmannia root, cornus officinalis, peony bark, yam, poria cocos, and oriental water plantain.
