Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Hemiplegia

Hemiplegia is a relatively common disease. The elderly are a high-risk group for the disease. Rehabilitation training is needed after hemiplegia occurs. At this time, it can be treated and recuperated through traditional Chinese medicine. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, hemiplegia is divided into many types, and different types require different Chinese medicines for treatment. Only in this way can the condition be gradually improved. Let's take a look at this aspect.

Qi deficiency and phlegm obstruction type

Symptoms: hemiplegia, deviated mouth and eyes, sallow complexion, hoarse speech, thin and white sputum, or dizziness, pale tongue with teeth marks, white and slippery or greasy tongue coating, slippery or stringy pulse.

Prescription: Liujunzi Decoction with modifications: 10g each of ginseng and licorice, 15g each of Poria, Atractylodes macrocephala, and dried tangerine peel, 15g each of Pinellia, Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, and Arisaema consanguineum.

Qi deficiency and blood stasis type

Symptoms: Limbs are slow to lift, or they are spasmodic or painful; the tongue is pale or dark purple, with ecchymosis; the tongue coating is thin white; the pulse is deep, thready or wiry.

Prescription: Buyang Huanwu Decoction: 30g raw astragalus, 15g each of angelica, peach kernel, red peony root, chuanxiong, roasted earthworm and safflower.

Wind Meridian Type

Symptoms: hemiplegia, deviated mouth and eyes, numbness of the skin, fever and chills, pale red tongue, thin white tongue coating, slippery or wiry pulse.

Prescription: 6g of cinnamon, 5g of cooked aconite, 5g of ephedra, 12g each of saposhnikovia divaricata, stephania tetrandra, and angelica sinensis, 10g each of ginseng, chuanxiong, white peony root, almond, astragalus, and licorice, and 5 slices of ginger.

Qi stagnation meridian type

Symptoms: paralysis of limbs or deviated mouth and eyes, distension in the chest and flanks, rapid sighing, fullness and stuffiness in the abdomen, pale red tongue, thin white tongue coating, and wiry pulse.

Prescription: Bawei Shunqi Powder: 10g each of ginseng, atractylodes, angelica dahurica, lindera strychnifolia, and tangerine peel, 15g each of poria and tangerine peel, and 8g of licorice.

Intestinal Qi Blockage Type

Symptoms: hemiplegia, deviated mouth and eyes, fullness and stuffiness in the abdomen, constipation, red and yellow urine, or dizziness and irritability, red tongue, yellow or greasy tongue coating, and slippery or wiry pulse.

Prescription: 10g each of Magnolia officinalis, Rhubarb, Citrus aurantium, and Licorice.

Evil heat accumulation type

Symptoms: hemiplegia, deviated mouth and eyes, flushed face, thirst and preference for cold drinks, red and yellow urine, red tongue with yellow coating, and rapid and strong pulse.

Prescription: 10g each of Chuanxiong, white peony root, Atractylodes macrocephala, chrysanthemum, Platycodon grandiflorum, Schizonepeta spicate, Forsythia suspensa, Scutellaria baicalensis, and Hanshuishi, 15g each of Angelica sinensis and Gypsum, 5g each of Amomum villosum, mint, talc, and rhubarb.

Qi and blood deficiency type

Symptoms: Slow and weak limbs, or pale and swollen limbs, dull complexion, shortness of breath and laziness to speak, low voice and timidity, or fear of wind and spontaneous sweating, pale tongue with teeth marks on the edges of the tongue, and a thready and weak pulse.

Prescription: Bazhen Decoction: 10g each of ginseng, Atractylodes macrocephala, Ligusticum chuanxiong, white peony root, and licorice, 15g each of Rehmannia glutinosa, Poria cocos, and Angelica sinensis.

Liver wind with phlegm type

Symptoms: hemiplegia, deviated mouth and eyes, dizziness or headache, irritability, or excessive sputum, numbness of limbs, red tongue with greasy white coating, and stringy or slippery pulse.

Prescription: 15g each of Atractylodes macrocephala, Poria cocos, Gastrodia elata, and Tangerine peel, 10g each of Pinellia ternata and Licorice, 3 slices of ginger, and 3 dates.
