Why do you drool when you sleep?

Many people will find that their pillows are wet when they wake up. That’s because they are drooling. Some people just don’t know why they drool when they sleep and think they have some disease. Actually, it is not. If your sleeping posture is not right, it is easy to cause drooling. If you drool when you sleep, you can read the following knowledge.

It is actually normal to drool while sleeping. There are many reasons for this. It may be due to improper sleeping posture or poor oral hygiene, which can also cause drooling.

(1) Poor oral hygiene: The temperature and humidity in the oral cavity are most suitable for the reproduction of bacteria. Food residues on the tooth surface and in the gaps between teeth also provide a "breeding ground" for bacteria, which often leads to oral ulcers, caries, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. This inflammatory stimulus will increase the secretion of saliva in the oral cavity, which is light yellow and salty in taste. If you have oral diseases, you should rinse your mouth after three meals a day, brush your teeth in the morning and evening, and seek timely treatment from a dentist.

(2) Dental deformity: Dental deformity is also one of the causes of drooling while sleeping. Especially for patients with convex tooth deformity, the front teeth protrude more obviously and the teeth are often exposed. When sleeping, it is difficult for the lips to completely cover the front teeth, and the upper and lower lips naturally separate and cannot close, which makes it easy to drool. These patients require orthodontic treatment.

(3) Nasal diseases: Upper respiratory diseases such as rhinitis, nasal polyps, nasal concha hypertrophy and pharyngitis can cause breathing difficulties, and you will involuntarily open your mouth to breathe when you sleep. Breathing with your mouth open can easily dry out your mouth, thereby increasing saliva secretion. If you have a nasal disease, you should get a clear diagnosis as soon as possible and receive symptomatic treatment.

(4) Nerve regulation disorder: Saliva secretion is controlled by nerves. Some patients with neurosis and systemic diseases with autonomic dysfunction can significantly affect oral saliva secretion due to the response of regulated reflexes. In life, language and delicious food can induce saliva secretion. Sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves directly regulate its secretion. When it is caused by systemic diseases, parasympathetic nerves may be excited during sleep, and saliva secretion may increase. People with neurological disorders should seek medical treatment for neurosis and pay attention to physical exercise and psychological quality training.

The above explains to you why you drool while sleeping. I believe that after reading this, you will no longer be so confused about the phenomenon of drooling. Everyone should pay attention. If this situation occurs for a long time, it is very likely that there is something wrong with your body. You should go to a regular hospital for examination and treatment in time to ensure your health.
