What medicine should I take for pericoronitis of wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a condition that only adults have, and they usually grow when they are over 22 years old. If the wisdom teeth cannot penetrate the gums during their growth, pericoronitis is very likely to occur. The general solution to this situation is to remove the wisdom teeth, but in general, this method is not recommended. Drug treatment is the best solution.

There are only two most commonly used drugs for treating wisdom tooth pericoronitis, which is taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs at the same time to achieve the effect of anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Although these treatments cannot cure the disease, they are indeed very effective. Different patients need different treatment methods for pericoronitis of wisdom teeth.

Pericoronitis often occurs when mandibular wisdom teeth are incompletely erupted or impacted, causing inflammation of the soft tissue around the crown. In the early stages of inflammation, patients feel swollen and painful gums, and the pain is obvious when chewing, swallowing, or opening their mouths. The pain worsens as the disease progresses. In severe cases, patients may be unable to open their mouths to varying degrees, or even have their jaws clenched. Treatment is mainly local. Normal saline and 2% hydrogen peroxide are usually used to rinse the area, and then iodine glycerin is placed. It is best to do it 1 to 3 times a day, and then rinse the mouth with chlorhexidine mouthwash. If an abscess is formed, it should be promptly incised and drained. If you experience redness, swelling, heat and pain in your cheeks, or even fever and pain all over your body, you can use antibiotics and anti-inflammatory analgesics. Commonly used drugs are broad-spectrum antibiotics and metronidazole.

1. Systemic treatment

Depending on the condition, antibacterial drugs or Chinese herbal medicines for internal use that clear heat and detoxify are used for treatment.

2. Local treatment

Local treatment of pericoronitis of wisdom teeth is important. The blind bag can be flushed with 1% to 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, normal saline or other sterile solution every day, and then 3% iodine glycerol can be injected. Also give gargle with compound borax solution or furacillin solution several times a day. In the early stages, local physical therapy and external application of Chinese herbal medicine can also be used to help absorb inflammation. Acupuncture therapy can relieve pain and improve mouth opening. If abscess cavity is formed, it can be incised and drained.

3. Treatment of affected teeth

After the acute inflammation subsides, the diseased tooth should be further treated to prevent recurrence. If the teeth are in the correct position, can erupt normally, and have opposing teeth to perform chewing functions, a pericoronal gingival flap wedge resection can be performed; otherwise, the teeth should be extracted.

After knowing what medicine to take for wisdom tooth pericoronitis and its specific treatment methods, if you have wisdom tooth pericoronitis again, I believe you will know how to deal with it. In addition, it is recommended that in order to avoid the recurrence of wisdom tooth pericoronitis, you should maintain a light diet and avoid eating foods that are easy to cause inflammation.
