Symptoms of narcolepsy

Symptoms of narcolepsy

It is inevitable for people to get sick when living in this world. Sometimes, if you eat too cleanly or wear too cleanly, you will get sick; and if you eat too dirty or wear too dirty, you will also get sick. So there is a saying that you won’t get sick if you eat dirty food. What seems like a joke sometimes actually makes sense. Narcolepsy is a disease that causes sleep problems. Today, let me tell you about this disease.

So what kind of disease is narcolepsy? Many people want to know more about it. After all, this disease sounds very abnormal. The name gives people the impression that people always need to sleep, which will delay many things. So what are the symptoms of narcolepsy?

Hypersomnia refers to excessive daytime sleepiness that is not caused by lack of sleep, alcohol, drugs, physical illness, or a mental disorder (such as depression). The cause of the disease is currently unclear, but it is often related to psychological factors.

Patients often feel drowsy and sleepy regardless of the situation, and have varying degrees of irresistible falling asleep. Excessive sleep causes significant distress or a decline in occupational, social, or other social functioning and quality of life. There will also be changes in cognitive function, manifested as decreased recent memory, decreased thinking ability, and decreased ability to learn new things.

1. Primary hypersomnia

This type of hypersomnia is characterized by complaints of excessive sleepiness for at least one month, with prolonged sleep time almost every day or an uncontrollable urge to sleep during the day. Moreover, this situation is not caused by not sleeping well the night before or lack of sleep, nor is it caused by the influence of drugs, nor is it caused by poor physical conditions such as metabolism or endocrine system. At this time, it can be preliminarily determined to be primary hypersomnia.

2. Recurrent hypersomnia

Common types of hypersomnia include Kleine-Guwen syndrome and recurrent premenstrual hypersomnia. The characteristic of abnormal premenstrual sleepiness is that the symptoms of sleepiness occur cyclically and are related to the menstrual cycle. After the menstrual period, the symptoms of sleepiness disappear. This condition must occur for at least 3 consecutive months to be diagnosed as premenstrual hypersomnia.

During the premenstrual hypersomnia episode, multiple sleep physiological electroencephalography examinations showed normal night sleep, but multiple sleep latency tests during the day showed hypersomnia.

3. Narcolepsy

The excessive sleepiness symptom of narcolepsy refers to falling asleep suddenly during the day regardless of the occasion or place, such as falling asleep suddenly while eating, driving, or working. Such patients often have experience of traffic accidents or work accidents. However, patients with narcolepsy often complain of insomnia at night. This may be because frequent hypnagogic hallucinations or sleep paralysis cause intermittent sleep at night and prevent them from sleeping through the night; it may also be because of excessive daytime sleepiness, which interferes with sleep at night. Although patients with narcolepsy always seem to be in a drowsy and sleepy state, their total sleep time in 24 hours a day is not longer than that of normal people.

Through the introduction of the above content, we can understand that narcolepsy is a disease related to psychological factors, and there is not only one situation. There are many reasons for narcolepsy and they cannot be generalized. However, once this symptom appears, it is best to go to a professional psychological counseling center to receive formal treatment to avoid causing other diseases.
