Treatments for stroke

Chinese medicine treatment:

1. Wind-phlegm entering the collaterals syndrome

Numbness of the skin, hands and feet, sudden facial paralysis, slurred speech, drooling from the corners of the mouth, stiff tongue and slurred speech, or even hemiplegia, or accompanied by cramps in the hands and feet, joint pain, thin white tongue coating, and a floating and rapid pulse.

Summary of syndrome: The meridians are empty, wind and phlegm invade the philtrum, and qi and blood are blocked.

Treatment method: dispel wind, resolve phlegm and dredge meridians.

Representative prescription: Zhen Fang Bai Wanzi with modifications. This prescription can resolve phlegm and dredge the meridians. It is used to treat wind-phlegm invading the meridians, with symptoms such as facial paralysis, stiff tongue, inability to speak, and paralysis of hands and feet.

Commonly used medicines: Pinellia, Arisaema, and White Aconitum for dispelling wind and resolving phlegm; Gastrodia and Scorpion for extinguishing wind and unblocking meridians; Angelica, White Peony, Millettia Spatholobi, and Achyranthes bidentata for nourishing blood and dispelling wind.

For those with slurred speech, add calamus and polygala to dispel phlegm and open the orifices; for those with phlegm and blood stasis, purple tongue with ecchymosis, and thin and wiry pulse, add salvia miltiorrhiza, peach kernel, safflower, red peony root, etc. to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis.

2. Wind-Yang Upward Disturbance Syndrome

The patient usually suffers from dizziness, headache, tinnitus and vertigo, and may suddenly develop facial paralysis, stiff tongue and slurred speech, or heaviness of hands and feet, or even paralysis. The tongue is red with yellow coating and the pulse is stringy.

Summary of syndrome: Liver fire is excessive, hyperactivity of Yang transforms into wind, and runs through the collateral vessels.

Treatment method: Calm the liver and suppress yang, promote blood circulation and dredge collaterals.

Representative prescription: Tianma Gou Teng Drink with modifications. This prescription calms the liver, extinguishes wind and calms the mind. It is used for symptoms such as hyperactivity of yang, wind movement, dizziness, and limb numbness.

Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes symptomatic treatment, with one prescription for each person.
