What causes cervical erosion? Will it cause infertility?

Cervical erosion is relatively common among gynecological diseases. Since there are no obvious symptoms at the beginning of the disease, some female friends do not pay much attention to it. However, when obvious symptoms appear, it becomes very difficult to treat. So what is cervical erosion?

Cervical erosion

Cervical erosion occurs due to childbirth, miscarriage, postpartum infection, surgical operation or mechanical stimulation such as sexual intercourse that damages the cervix, and pathogens invade and cause infection. What I hope to attract everyone's attention is that since there is direct contact between the penis and the cervix during sexual intercourse, if you do not pay attention to sexual hygiene, you can directly bring bacteria into the vagina and infect the cervix. For women who already have cervical erosion, it can aggravate their cervical inflammation and may expand the erosion area. Severe cervical erosion may sometimes cause bleeding during sexual intercourse. Therefore, regardless of whether women suffer from cervical erosion or not, they must pay attention to sexual hygiene. Both men and women should clean the vulva before sexual intercourse, and men should pay attention to removing smegma, because it is currently believed that the cholesterol in the smegma can be converted into carcinogens under the action of bacteria. Active treatment is required after suffering from cervical erosion.

The cervical erosion grading method is divided into three degrees: light, moderate and severe according to the size of the erosion area. When the erosion area is less than 1/3 of the entire cervical area, it is mild cervical erosion; when the erosion area is between 1/3 and 2/3 of the cervical area, it is moderate erosion; when the erosion area is more than 2/3 of the entire cervical area, it is severe erosion.

The manifestations of cervical erosion can be divided into three types

1. Simplicity

Erosions are often seen in the early stages of inflammation. The erosion surface is covered by a single layer of columnar epithelium, and the epidermis is relatively flat and smooth.

2. Granular type

If the inflammation continues, the cervical epithelium will overproliferate, and the erosion surface will be uneven and granular in appearance, which is granular erosion.

3. Nipple type

If the glandular epithelium and stroma proliferate significantly, the unevenness becomes more obvious, and it becomes papillary-like, which is called papillary erosion.

These three types can exist independently or coexist in an interlaced manner.

Can cervical erosion cause infertility?

Under normal circumstances, mild cervical erosion will not affect pregnancy, so there is no need to worry too much. However, moderate to severe cervical erosion may affect normal pregnancy.

Due to moderate to severe cervical erosion, the cervical secretions are large and mixed with a large number of white blood cells and various pathogenic bacteria. These substances destroy the normal acid-base environment of the vagina. This reduces sperm motility. In addition, the cervical mucosa may proliferate due to inflammatory stimulation, and polyps may grow to block the cervical opening, directly affecting the smooth passage of sperm.

Cervical erosion is one of the manifestations of cervicitis. Mild cervicitis will not cause infertility. The cervix is just one of the channels for sperm and is a part of the uterus. The gestational sac is implanted in the uterine cavity. Cervicitis can cause an increase in leucorrhea, bleeding during sexual intercourse, and physical discomfort. Sometimes there will be pain during sexual intercourse. Cervicitis is also very difficult to treat. Therefore, women should pay more attention to sexual health awareness.
