Scars around the eyes

Scars around the eyes

The eyes are one of the most important parts of the human body, and eye health is very important, but if problems occur, they should be treated promptly. If the eyes are injured, scars will be left, and the problem is very serious. We should find a way to repair it in time, but everyone has different rules for breaking scars, so what should we do if we have scars around our eyes?

Scars on the eyelids are mostly caused by infection, burns and trauma. They may also be caused by the removal of moles, hemangiomas or cysts in the eyelid area. The scar is usually on one eyelid. During treatment, small scars on the upper eyelid can be directly removed and sutured without causing ectropion;

After the large scar is removed, skin grafting is still required. From a cosmetic point of view, when removing the eyelid scar, double eyelid surgery can be performed at the same time to reduce the postoperative scar and try to make it symmetrical with the other side. If the other side is a single eyelid, it can be changed to a double eyelid. It can make the surgical scar partially hidden in the double eyelid groove and achieve a balance between the left and right sides for a natural effect.

Most cases of ptosis are congenital, but some are hereditary and may sometimes coexist with epicanthus, small palpebral fissures, narrow eyelids, strabismus, etc.

Some ptosis is acquired, mostly unilateral, caused by muscle or oculomotor nerve damage after trauma or illness. Patients with ptosis have weakened or disappeared function of the levator palpebrae superioris muscles, which causes the upper eyelid margin to be lower than normal when the eyes are open, partially or completely covering the pupil and impairing vision. In order to see objects clearly, some patients use the contraction of the frontalis muscle to lift the upper eyelid. As a result, the forehead wrinkles increase and the eyebrows stand upright, which not only affects their appearance but also looks unsightly.

The treatment of ptosis usually involves shortening of the levator palpebrae superioris muscles. For methods such as frontalis muscle suspension, the appropriate age for surgery is after 5 years old. During the correction, double eyelids are usually formed. Another type of eyelid drooping is due to aging, loose skin, loss of muscle tension, and loosening of the fibers connecting the skin to the orbital septum, which causes the upper eyelid to droop and can severely affect vision.

The surgery can remove excess loose skin and thickened and elongated muscle fibers, and if necessary, remove the fat that protrudes from the eye socket. Ectropion deformity is a common problem in patients with facial burns. Because the eyelids cannot close, the eyeballs are often exposed and irritated, causing the eyeballs to become red and painful, with a foreign body sensation and frequent tears. If the cornea is exposed for a long time and is not moistened by eye fluid, exposure keratitis and corneal ulcers may occur. If not treated in time, it may lead to blindness.

Patients with ectropion should receive enhanced care before surgery. Eye drops should be applied every 2 hours during the day, and some eye ointment should be applied before going to bed to protect the cornea from direct exposure. It is best to cover it with a layer of sterilized vaseline gauze or apply eye ointment thicker. It is best to wear an eye patch whether day or night. During treatment, for mild ectropion, the ectropion scar can be loosened and removed under local anesthesia, the ectropion conjunctiva can be repositioned, and free skin grafting can be performed on the wound at the released eyelid site. The patient will heal in about a week.
