What are the effects of the traditional Chinese medicine Baifu Pian?

Baifuzi and Baifupian are two different medicines, so do not mix them! The two names are similar and often confused, but their effects are very different.

Different processing

White aconite root is made by peeling the skin of aconite root, slicing it, floating it in clean water until the water turns milky white, taking it out and steaming it, drying it in the sun, or fumigating it with sulfur. Aconite is the root of Aconitum, which is a highly toxic Chinese medicinal material. Aconite is made by soaking Aconitum in bile water and then boiling it in water.

Different effects

The former, namely, Baifuzi, has the effects of drying dampness and resolving phlegm, dispelling wind and stopping spasms, as well as detoxifying and dispersing nodules. It is clinically used for wind-phlegm congestion, facial paralysis, and scrofula and phlegm nodules; while the latter, Baifupian, has the effects of restoring yang and rescuing adverse conditions, replenishing fire and assisting yang, and expelling wind, cold and dampness. It is clinically used for yang loss syndrome, yang deficiency syndrome, and arthralgia.

White and black aconite

White aconite root and black aconite root are collectively called aconite root, and aconite root (black aconite root and white aconite root) are used directly as medicine. The processing is different, but the effect is the same.

Different processing

Select mud aconite of uniform size, wash them, soak them in a water solution of edible bile for several days, boil them together with the soaking liquid until they are cooked through, remove them, peel off the skin, cut them longitudinally into slices about 0.3 cm thick, soak them in water, take them out, steam them thoroughly, and dry them in the sun. They are commonly known as "white aconite slices".

White aconite root has no outer skin, is yellowish white, translucent, and about 0.3cm thick.

Black Fistula (Heishunpian)

Take the mud aconite. Wash them according to size, soak them in an aqueous solution of edible bile for several days, boil them together with the soaking liquid until they are cooked through, remove them, rinse them with water, cut them longitudinally into slices about 0.5 cm thick, soak them in water again, dye the slices into a strong tea color with a colorant, take them out, steam them until they are oily and shiny, bake them until they are half dry, and then dry them in the sun or continue to bake them in an oven. They are commonly known as "Heishun Pian".

Heishun slices are longitudinal slices, wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, 1.7 to 5 cm long and 0.9 to 3 cm wide. Thickness: 0.2～0.5cm. The outer skin is dark brown, the cut surface is dark yellow, oily and shiny, translucent, and has longitudinal duct bundles. It is hard and brittle, with a horny cross section. Slight odor, light taste.

Same effect

Both are collectively called Fupian, and Fupian (Heishunpian and Baifupian) are used directly as medicine. Both are processed products of aconite root. In terms of efficacy, the two are similar, but there are slight differences.

[Nature and flavor and meridians] Pungent, sweet, very hot; poisonous. It enters the heart, kidney and spleen meridians.

【Function and indications】Restore yang and rescue from adverse condition, replenish fire and assist yang, dispel cold and relieve pain. It is used for yang loss, collapse, cold limbs and weak pulse, insufficient heart yang, chest pain and heart pain, vomiting and diarrhea due to deficiency cold, cold pain in the abdomen, kidney yang deficiency, impotence and cold uterus, yin-cold edema, exogenous infection due to yang deficiency, and arthralgia due to cold and dampness.

[Usage and Dosage] 3-15g, fry first and simmer for a long time. [Note] Pregnant women should use with caution; it should not be used with Pinellia, Trichosanthes, Trichosanthes, Trichosanthes peel, Radix Trichosanthis, Fritillaria cirrhosa, Fritillaria thunbergii, Fritillaria balsamifera, Fritillaria hupehensis, Bletilla striata, and Bletilla striata.

[Storage] Salted aconite should be sealed in a cool and dry place; black aconite slices and white aconite slices should be placed in a dry place to prevent moisture.
