Although aconite and monkshood are the same plant, they have slightly different processing methods and thus have slight differences in clinical application. It is generally believed that aconite is better at replenishing fire and restoring yang, while monkshood is better at dispersing cold and relieving pain. Raw aconite, raw Chuanwu, and raw Caowu are all highly toxic. They must be processed when taken internally and must be simmered for a long time when made into decoctions. The raw ones are generally only for external use, but should not be used if the skin is damaged.
