How many sweet families have been ruined by the three words "cute"

Succulent plants have suddenly become popular in recent years. Many young people like to buy them and keep them at home. Many people even go online shopping to buy foreign varieties. But are these "cute" succulent plants harmless to the human body? In fact, these seemingly "cute" succulents hide great dangers, and problematic cases are common. Overseas shopping is even more risky! So which succulents are harmful?

The reporter learned from the Zhenjiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau that it has recently received many consultation calls from people who want to "buy" succulents from abroad. However, the inspection and quarantine department warned that the "succulent plants" purchased abroad, which are favored by "overseas shoppers", are fashionable but unsafe. In addition to easily bringing harmful microorganisms into the country, they also contain toxins, posing a threat to the human body and health. Therefore, as a fashion, you need to be cautious when purchasing succulents overseas.

It is reported that succulents are honest and cute, colorful, and have a lovely appearance. Now they are increasingly loved by urban people. Many young men and women regard overseas shopping and raising succulents as a fashion. In recent years, with the development of international logistics, more and more "overseas shoppers" have begun to choose to purchase directly from abroad or bring seeds and plants into the country. However, the inspection and quarantine department reminds that overseas purchases of such goods must be legal and in compliance with regulations. It is understood that this year, inspection and quarantine departments in many places have intercepted different types of succulents when checking incoming letters.

The relevant person in charge of the Zhenjiang Inspection and Quarantine Department told reporters that succulents are living plants with reproductive capabilities, which are easily infected by bacteria, fungi and viruses, and can easily bring harmful microorganisms into the country. At the same time, the root parts of succulents often carry soil and quarantine nematodes, and the stems and leaves carry quarantine pests such as scale insects. These pests move with seeds and plants, spreading over a wider area and at a faster speed during the planting process, posing great risks.

In addition, the person in charge also reminded that it is understood that many succulents that the current "overseas shopping tribe" likes to buy contain toxins: for example, the juice of "pig ears" is very harmful to the heart; the "god-given" needles, when pierced into the human body, can cause severe vomiting, arrhythmia, atrioventricular conduction block and even death.

According to the inspection and quarantine department, most overseas shoppers import succulents by mail. However, the "List of Animals and Plants and Their Products Prohibited from Being Carried or Mailed into the Country of the People's Republic of China" shows that succulents are items prohibited from being mailed into the country. If succulents are purchased and imported, the purchaser must provide the "Imported Seed and Seedling Quarantine Approval Form" issued by my country's agricultural authorities and the "Plant Quarantine Certificate" issued by the official exporting country when the succulents enter the country. At the same time, it should be ensured that succulents are only used in urban homes or grown in isolation in nurseries with epidemic prevention conditions, and are not allowed to be directly planted in agricultural ecosystems.

To this end, the Zhenjiang Inspection and Quarantine Department reminds consumers that they should understand the relevant policies and regulations in advance and be cautious when purchasing imported succulents to avoid causing loss of personal life and property safety.

This is not the first time that there are problems with succulents...

January 16, 2015: The Food and Agricultural Products Center of Shandong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau intercepted an important plant pathogen, Erwinia cypripedii, from a batch of Echeveria imported from South Korea. The batch of plants has been put under quarantine in accordance with the law.

January 2015: Suzhou Inspection and Quarantine Department seized a batch of succulent plants from the Netherlands. The plants were declared as toys and no quarantine certificates issued by foreign official quarantine agencies were obtained in advance, posing a high risk of epidemic transmission. Suzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau immediately sent it to the exotic pest control laboratory for epidemic culture and identification. The laboratory successfully detected an important pest, the Lycoris radiata mealybug, through isolated cultivation in a greenhouse and using genetic barcode identification technology.
