Many people feel bitter and dry mouth when they wake up in the morning, and they don’t know what causes it. Bitter taste and dry mouth are both symptoms of bad breath. In particular, dry mouth can cause the growth of anaerobic bacteria in the mouth and aggravate bad breath. So what causes bad breath and bitter taste? 1. Bad breath due to intestinal obstruction is a late manifestation of small and large intestinal obstruction, which is caused by vomiting bile and fecal-like substances. Other symptoms of small intestinal obstruction include constipation, abdominal distension, and intermittent periumbilical colic. In case of large intestinal obstruction, the abdominal pain is mild and located in the lower abdomen. 2. Bronchiectasis This disease often causes bad breath in the mouth, and some patients have a disgusting sweet taste. Typical patients also cough up large amounts of foul-smelling sputum. Worse when lying down or when rising in the morning, with extra breath sounds, fatigue, and weight loss. Auscultation may reveal coarse breath sounds or moist rales in the lesion area. Clubbing of the fingers may occur in late stages. 3. Influenza Influenza may also cause bad breath, accompanied by dry cough and sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, fatigue, joint pain and myalgia. 4. Esophageal cancer: Bad breath is accompanied by difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, chest pain and weight loss. Nocturnal urination, diarrhea, and cachexia are late manifestations. 5. Bad breath caused by gastric cancer is a symptom of late-stage gastric cancer. Gastric cancer also has other symptoms such as chronic indigestion, abdominal distension, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, fatigue, pallor, changes in bowel habits, weight loss and muscle atrophy that cannot be relieved by antacids. When gastric bleeding occurs, vomiting blood and black stools may occur. 6. Gastrocolonic fistula: In this disease, there is a fecal odor in the mouth and there may be intermittent diarrhea before it. 7. Gingivitis Gingivitis causes red and swollen gums and may also cause bad breath. In this disease, the gums between teeth are prone to bleeding after slight trauma. Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis may cause foul-smelling breath and a gray exudate coating between the teeth. Severe ulcers may also cause fever, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, headache, and anorexia. 8. Late-stage hepatic encephalopathy may be accompanied by ammonia odor in the mouth, coma, asterixis and deep hyperreflexia. |
