Should I apply hot or cold compress when the swelling occurs? What are the precautions?

In daily life, when we suffer trauma, we usually experience swelling at the injured area. So, is it better to apply hot or cold compress? The following article will introduce it to you.

Should I apply heat or cold compress if the swelling occurs?

When using cold compresses, the local and even body temperature can be lowered, which will gradually cause blood vessels to contract to avoid bleeding, bruising, and swelling. It can also reduce the metabolic rate and delay nerve conduction to achieve the effect of anti-inflammatory, analgesic and paralytic effects. Ice compresses are often used in acute injuries such as sprains, inflammation, muscle spasms or edema, and the effect is very significant.

The effect of hot compress is just the opposite. It can increase body temperature, dilate blood vessels, promote local blood circulation, increase the body's metabolic rate, promote the absorption of inflammation, eliminate tissue edema, increase ligaments, restore muscle elasticity, and promote healing.

Therefore, hot and cold compresses cannot be used interchangeably. Generally speaking, ice compresses should be used within 24 hours after injury, and hot compresses should be used after 48 hours. In case of bleeding, apply cold compress to stop the bleeding, and then apply hot compress after two or three days.

Note:

When using ice compresses, be careful not to let the ice come into direct contact with the skin. Wrap the ice with a towel or use an ice bag. Do not apply ice for a long time. Take local and temporary measures and apply ice to the affected area for about a quarter of an hour.

Similarly, pay attention to the temperature of the hot compress, which should not be too high. Generally, hot water soaking or hot compress pack is used for twenty to thirty minutes, which will have a good effect. When using a hot compress, it is best to wrap it with a towel and open it in time to check and dissipate heat to avoid burns.
