What causes swollen lips? What causes this?

Under normal circumstances, lips are rosy, moderately dry and moist, and shiny. However, if you find that your lips are swollen or even change color, you should be alert. This abnormal condition of the lips may be a sign that your body is sick.

1. Allergic reaction

Swollen lips can occur when you have an allergic reaction to certain foods or drinks. In addition, some women who love beauty like to apply lipstick on their lips, or inject collagen, etc. If the body has an allergic reaction to these substances, it will also cause swollen lips.

2. Keratoacanthoma

If your lips are swollen and have hard, brown bumps in the center or ulcers on the upper edge of your lips, you may have a keratoacanthoma. This is a very fast-growing skin lesion that is often related to sun damage. It may appear suddenly and disappear on its own, leaving only a small dent. However, it may also be a precancerous lesion like actinic cheilitis.

3. Recurrent lip and facial swelling and facial paralysis syndrome

If the lips are swollen for a long time and are accompanied by varying degrees of facial swelling, facial nerve paralysis, migraine, drooling, sweating and tearing, you need to be alert to recurrent lip and facial swelling and facial paralysis syndrome. In the early stages of the disease, each attack may last from a few minutes to three weeks. However, after repeated attacks, it can become chronic or even permanent.

4. Actinic cheilitis

If your lower lip is swollen and accompanied by red or white hard spots or ulcers with bleeding, as well as dryness, peeling, chapped skin, vasodilation and other symptoms, you should be alert to the possibility of actinic cheilitis. This is an inflammatory reaction of the lips caused by long-term exposure to sunlight, and is generally common in people over 50 years old. In addition, it is also important to note that actinic cheilitis is a precancerous lesion and may indicate the presence of skin cancer on the lower lip.

5. Anaphylactic shock

If your lips suddenly swell and are accompanied by symptoms such as difficulty swallowing and breathing, it may be anaphylactic shock. In this case, you need to seek medical attention immediately, otherwise your life may be in danger.
