How to treat snoring?

In daily life, there are many people who snore when they sleep. Everyone thinks this is a normal phenomenon, but they don’t know that this is a pathological manifestation and can even be fatal. Currently, the treatment of snoring has been put on the agenda, and physical therapy, conservative therapy and dietary therapy are all effective.

1. Physical treatment

Use a snoring device when you sleep. The principle is: by placing a personalized instrument in the mouth, the patient's lower jaw is fixed in an appropriate forward position. The forward protrusion of the lower jaw causes the genioglossus muscle to pull the tongue forward, so that the breathing passage at the back of the tongue is opened. At the same time, the forward movement of the tongue reduces the pressure of the tongue on the uvula, and the respiratory passage behind it is also opened. Thereby increasing ventilation volume, improving oxygen supply, eliminating or reducing snoring, and being an effective treatment for snoring. This treatment method is non-invasive, low-cost and effective; the disadvantage is that it takes patients a few days to adapt to sleeping with a snoring device.

2. Conservative treatment for weight loss; improving sleeping position, avoiding lying on your back with a high pillow and your head bent forward; instrumental therapy, such as nasal valve dilator, self-flowing tongue depressor, etc.

3. Diet: Eat more light food, such as vegetables, fruits, smoke less and do not drink alcohol. Go to bed early and get up early. Physical exercise can reduce snoring symptoms.

4. Surgical treatment: It is suitable for patients who are ineffective with conservative treatment, whose snoring volume is greater than 60dB, whose breath-holding lasts for more than 10 to 20 seconds each time during sleep, whose sleep apnea occurs at least 10 times per hour, whose head feels swollen in the morning, who are confused and sleepy during the day, whose breath-holding and hypoxemia during sleep are confirmed by instrument examination, whose family members report typical symptoms, and whose pharyngeal cavity is narrowed. In this case, palatopharyngoplasty, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or laser uvulopalatopharyngoplasty can be performed. Please note that the above surgery is not suitable for patients with central or mixed snoring, those with blood oxygen saturation below 50%, or those with micrognathia or retrognathia.
