1. Pillow height

For a comfortable and healthy sleep, the head and torso should be kept at the same level when lying on your back, with the pillow located under the neck, keeping the head slightly tilted back; when lying on your side, the pillow should be at the same height as the shoulder, so as to relax the neck and shoulder muscles.

The specific height of the pillow needs to be determined according to individual sleeping posture, physiological curvature and age. Generally speaking, the pillow height for children aged 3 to 6 is 3 to 6 cm, 7 to 10 cm for children aged 7 to 11, 9 to 12 cm for children aged 14 to 15, and 12 to 15 cm for adults. The length of the pillow should be 10 to 16 cm longer than the width of the shoulders.

Not using a pillow for a long time or using a pillow that is too high or too low will affect the neck ligaments, muscles, spinal cord, and nerve roots. Correct use of pillows helps maintain spinal health and improve sleep quality.

2. Pillow shape

The ideal shape of a pillow is high in the front and low in the back, or low in the middle and high around the edges, which is conducive to maintaining the normal physiological curvature of the cervical spine and achieving the effect of relaxation and neck protection.

There are many types of pillows sold on the market, and they are often flat in shape. Although such a pillow looks beautiful, it does not conform to the natural physiological curvature of the cervical spine.

3. Pillow hardness

The pillow core should not be too hard or too soft, it is best to be comfortable. The pillow is too hard, the contact area between the heel and the head is small, the pressure increases, and the scalp becomes uncomfortable. If it is too soft, it will be difficult to maintain a certain height, which can easily cause neck muscle fatigue and is also not conducive to sleep.

In addition, if the pillow is too elastic, such as a spring pillow, the head may be subjected to additional elastic force and cause muscle fatigue and injury, so it is not suitable for long-term use.

4. Medicated pillow selection

Medicinal pillows have a long history of use in my country. There are various types of medicated pillows on the market, so choose carefully. If used improperly, it will not only fail to play its due role, but will also aggravate the original condition.

Generally speaking, tea pillows, chrysanthemum pillows, mung bean pillows and five-leaf pillows, etc., have the effects of reducing fire and refreshing the brain, clearing away heat and detoxifying from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine. They are especially suitable for people with yin deficiency and internal fire, and are better used in summer.

Magnetic pillows, blood-activating pillows, and cassia pillows are suitable for people with cervical spondylosis, high blood pressure, and memory loss, but are not suitable for people with low blood pressure.

It should be noted that if women are menstruating or pregnant, they should try not to use medicated pillows or water pillows, especially blood-activating pillows, to avoid problems caused by using the pillows.
