What to do when you feel mentally depressed?

Youth needs passion and vitality, but some friends seem to be listless all day long. Is there any way to treat it? In fact, if you want to change this situation, your own efforts are particularly important. You must have confidence and participate in more class reunions.

1. Causes

When people encounter sudden setbacks or their personal wishes are not met, the painful experience and emotional sadness they experience are temporary and they can re-adapt quickly. However, in some children with poor genetic qualities and difficult early experiences, depression can last for a long time, sometimes even for more than several years. This long-lasting or overly severe depressive mood constitutes the so-called depressive symptoms and mental fatigue. Furthermore, putting too much pressure on yourself, not getting enough sleep, overworking your brain, having irregular rest times, and having too frequent and irregular sex may also lead to mental depression.

2. Clinical manifestations:

(1) Physiological manifestations: poor appetite, decreased or increased appetite, significant weight loss or gain, insomnia or drowsiness.

2. Psychological manifestations: depression, low mood or lowest point, hopelessness, easy tears, sadness, irritability, fear and terror, loneliness, boredom, emotional indifference, and dissatisfaction with oneself.

(3) The following behavioral changes may be common manifestations in children and adolescents: sudden decline in academic performance, sudden restlessness, sudden slowing of body movements, monotonous speech tone or silence, unexplained irritability, and unexplained frequent crying.

(iv) Severe depression patients are often misdiagnosed as having schizophrenia by doctors because they are accompanied by symptoms such as delusions of futility, guilt, punishment, illness, poverty, and auditory hallucinations.

3. Treatment and prevention methods

1. Seek help when you need it, don’t suffer in silence.

2. Do everything step by step, break big things into small pieces, and do one thing at a time.

4. Participate in more beneficial activities and meet and chat with friends more often.

5. Pay attention to identifying the themes of your depression (e.g., approval-seeking, shame, unhappy relationships, unrealistic ideals, perfectionism) and challenge them when you find them.

6. Use rational/compassionate thinking to challenge your own ideas, be compassionate to yourself, build self-confidence, and establish your own social values! The reason why God gives you such a heavy cross is because He believes that you can bear it.

7. Challenge negative ideas, establish new behavioral patterns, and be fully prepared mentally for setbacks and failures.
