How to treat mumps? Combining Chinese and Western medicine works fast!

Mumps is a common respiratory infectious disease that often occurs in children and adolescents. Generally, parents will choose Western medicine for treatment, but they don’t know that the combination of Chinese and Western medicine will be more effective!

1. Western medicine treatment of mumps

Its characteristics are: obvious local pitting edema, local throbbing pain and localized tenderness points, hesitation in puncture and pus; pus discharge from the parotid duct orifice, and obvious symptoms of systemic infection and poisoning. Method of incision and drainage: local infiltration anesthesia. An incision is made in front of the ear and at the posterior edge of the mandibular ramus from the tragus down to the mandibular angle. The skin, subcutaneous tissue and parotid-masseter fascial fluid accumulated under the fascia can be drained. If there is no pus overflow, a curved vascular forceps can be inserted into the abscess cavity of the parotid gland to drain the pus. Because there are often multiple abscesses, attention should be paid to separating them in different directions to separate the abscess cavities of each glandular lobule. After flushing, install a rubber drainage strip, flush with saline every day and replace the drainage strip.

II. TCM Treatment of Mumps

1. Syndrome of Warm Toxin Attacking the Surface

[Main symptoms] Mild fever, swelling of the cheek under one or both ears, pain when pressed, and a sense of elasticity. The tip of the tongue is red, the tongue coating is thin white, and the pulse is floating and rapid.

[Treatment method] Dispel wind and heat, disperse stagnation and reduce swelling.

【Prescription】Yinqiao Powder. Main medicines: honeysuckle, forsythia, fermented black beans, burdock seeds, schizonepeta, mint, reed root, platycodon, bamboo leaves, and licorice. For red, swollen and painful throat, remove the Nepeta tenuifolia and add puffball, isatis root and sophora flavescens to clear away heat, detoxify and relieve sore throat; for nausea and vomiting, add tangerine peel and bamboo shavings to clear the stomach and stop vomiting; for swollen and painful cheeks, add self-poisonous herb to clear liver fire, disperse nodules and reduce swelling.

2. Heat and toxicity syndrome

[Main symptoms] High fever, headache, irritability, diffuse swelling of cheeks, pain that refuses to be pressed. The tongue is red with yellow coating, and the pulse is rapid and strong.

【Treatment method】 Clear away heat and detoxify, soften and disperse lumps.

【Prescription】Puji Disinfection Drink. Main medicines: Scutellaria baicalensis, Coptis chinensis, Forsythia suspensa, Scrophularia ningpoensis, Puffball, Isatis root, Burdock fruit, Bombyx batryticatus, Cimicifuga heracleifolia, Bupleurum chinense, Tangerine peel, Platycodon grandiflorum, ginseng, and licorice. For those with diffuse swelling and hard lumps on the cheeks, remove the licorice and add self-cultivation, seaweed, and kelp to soften and disperse the lumps; for those with excessive heat and toxicity and constipation, add rhubarb and Xuanming powder to purge heat and relieve constipation; for those with headache and vomiting, add Uncaria rhynchophylla, chrysanthemum, and bamboo shavings to clear heat and calm the liver.

3. Poisoning the heart and liver

[Main symptoms] Swollen parotid glands, persistent high fever, drowsiness, stiff neck, vomiting, and even coma and convulsions. The tongue is red, the tongue coating is yellow and rough, and the pulse is strong and rapid.

[Prescription] Puji Xiaodu Drink, Zixuedan or Zhibaodan. The three medicines work together to clear away heat, detoxify, calm wind and open the orifices. If vomiting is severe, add magnetite, stove heart soil, and bamboo shavings to reduce the adverse effects and stop vomiting.

4. Evil spirits invading the liver meridian

[Main symptoms] Swollen and hot cheeks, swollen and painful testicles in men, and lower abdominal pain in women. The tongue is reddish, the tongue coating is yellow, and the pulse is stringy and rapid.

【Prescription】Longdan Xiegan Decoction. Main medicines: Gentiana, Alisma, Akebia, Plantago, Angelica, Bupleurum, Licorice, and Rehmannia. In clinical practice, Angelica sinensis, Red Peony Root, Toosendan Fructus, and Corydalis yanhusuo are often added to regulate qi, promote blood circulation, and relieve pain; Alisma orientalis, litchi seed, and Radix Dioscoreae are added to eliminate dampness and turbidity.
