Pharmacological effects of digitalis

Digitalis, the name of a Chinese herbal medicine. It is the leaves of the green plants Digitalis purpurea L. or Datura innoxia Mill. of the Scrophulariaceae family. Foxglove is bred and cultivated in Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang Province and other places. Datura is bred and grown in Beijing, Shanghai and Zhejiang Province. It has the effect of clearing the brain and facilitating urination. Common in heart failure and cardiac edema.

Characteristics of Chinese medicinal materials

1. Foxglove leaves: The leaves are mostly broken and wrinkled, with detailed leaves ovate-lanceolate to broadly ovate, 10-40cm long and 4-11cm wide; the leaf tips are obtuse, and the leaf base gradually narrows into a wing-like leaf stem, about 17cm long; the leaf margins are irregularly serrated, the upper surface is dark green; slightly hairy, the petiole is concave; the lower surface is light green, densely hairy, with palmate reticulate veins, the main veins and key lateral veins are flat, bluish-purple, with obvious protrusions, and the fine veins do not extend into each serration of the leaf margin, and the texture is brittle. It has a faint smell when dry, and has a unique smell when wet, which is extremely bitter.

2. Foxglove Leaves: The leaves are often wrinkled and crushed. The leaves are long lanceolate or strip-lanceolate, sessile, 27cm long at the back, 1.5cm wide, dark green on the upper surface, light green on the lower surface, gradually pointed at the tip, entire; the basal leaves have irregular serrated margins, the tip narrowed to the wing-like leaf stem, the main vein is relatively thick, and the lateral veins are very few, extending from the base to the upper end of the leaf, or independent veins separate at obtuse angles and pass directly to the leaf tip. It is thin and brittle, easily broken, has a faint odor and tastes slightly bitter.
