Many people simply think that if they suffer from anorexia, they don’t need to think about losing weight, killing two birds with one stone. This kind of thinking is wrong. Anorexia and weight loss are two different concepts with huge differences. First, the purposes are different, and second, the effects on the endocrine system are different. Anorexia symptoms can be seen in some physical and mental illnesses. Therefore, when diagnosing anorexia, it should be mainly differentiated from certain physical diseases that can cause weight loss (such as tumors, tuberculosis), depression, somatization disorder, schizophrenia, and bulimia. A very important characteristic of anorexia is that patients think they are too fat and deny that they have this view and abnormal eating behavior. If the patient exhibits bulimia and purgative behavior during anorexia episodes, only the explosive form of anorexia is diagnosed. The Difference Between Anorexia and Weight Loss 1. Different purposes : Although both aim to reduce weight, the purpose of weight loss is to reduce excess fat and combine it with physical exercise to achieve physical perfection. It is a scientific method. The purpose of anorexia is to continuously lose weight and achieve a "morbid and weak" beauty. Its behavior is blind weight loss. 2. Different weight requirements : People who want to lose weight require to reach and maintain a standard weight, while anorexic patients still want to lose weight even if they reach the standard weight. 3. The measures taken are different ; weight loss generally involves controlling diet in moderation, reducing only the intake of staple foods, and paying attention to the intake of various essential substances. It is done under the premise of ensuring the health needs of the body, and the amount of exercise is also appropriate. Anorexia patients restrict all foods, and their exercise is forced and almost cruel, with excessive exercise. At the same time, anorexic patients will generally induce vomiting immediately and spit out all the food after being forced to eat by family members, relatives or friends. 4. Different effects on endocrine system: Normal weight loss has no effect on endocrine system. In the later stages of anorexia, patients will experience endocrine disorders such as amenorrhea. It can be seen that anorexia has a huge impact on health. In mild cases, it can affect a person's normal life and study, and in severe cases it can even endanger life. Therefore, the government takes active treatment measures. |
