Why do tonsil stones occur?

It is well known that tonsils are a type of nodule in the pharynx that is generally normal. However, in real life, many people have the problem of tonsil stones, which is a disease. Studies have shown that adults are much more likely to develop tonsil stones than children. If this happens, they generally feel pain and discomfort. This is because it contains a large amount of bacteria and sulfonamides. In addition, severe cases will also emit a foul odor. So why do tonsil stones occur?

Bacterial infection

Food residues easily attract bacteria, under the action of bacteria, they will slowly rot, harden and form stones. Anyone who has tonsillitis is at risk for developing tonsil stones.

Drug factors

Prescription drugs, such as high blood pressure medications, pain relievers, and antidepressants, can also cause tonsil stones. This is because a side effect of these drugs is a dry mouth, which means the tonsils don't have enough saliva to flush food and bacteria away. Tonsil stones form when lumps of calcified food, mucus, and bacteria become lodged in the pits of the tonsils.

age

Adults are at greater risk for tonsil stones because their tonsils are larger; the surface of the tonsils is bumpy, like the surface of the moon. As your tonsils grow, these "pits" become larger, making it easier for food to become trapped inside and form stones.

Symptoms of tonsil stones:

Why are tonsil stones usually small in size and embedded in the crypts above the tonsils, causing discomfort or pain to patients? The stones contain a large amount of sulfonamides and carry a large number of bacteria. When the stones are broken, they will emit sulfide gas with a smell similar to rotten eggs. Compared with the discomfort caused by the stones, the problem caused by this odor is more serious because it will cause patients to have embarrassing chronic bad breath.

Because the stones are often trapped in the tonsil crypts, patients with tonsil stones often feel a foreign body sensation in the throat. Some patients may try to remove the stones with a cotton swab or their fingers, but this may damage the soft tissue tonsils and cause the stones to rupture and emit a foul odor.
