People cannot survive without saliva, but excessive saliva secretion is not a good thing either. It is often caused by eight factors: Bell's palsy, pregnancy, oral inflammation, syphilis, tuberculosis, arsenic poisoning, drugs, and mercury poisoning. 1. Bell's palsy Facial nerve palsy results in an inability to regulate saliva secretion or eyelid closure on the affected side. (ii) Pregnancy During early pregnancy, many women experience increased salivation, vomiting, and breast tenderness. (III) Oral inflammation Oral mucosal ulcers are accompanied by moderate increased salivation, oral pain, fever and erythema. It usually heals on its own within 7 to 10 days, but scarring and recurrence may occur. (IV) Syphilis In secondary syphilis, increased salivation due to mucosal ulcers may persist for a year. Associated findings include fever, malaise, headache, anorexia, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, and generalized lymphadenopathy. A bilaterally symmetrical rash appears on the arms, trunk, palms, soles, face, and scalp. Genital warts appear around the genitals and anus. 5. Tuberculosis Some forms of leukoderma may cause a single, irregularly shaped sore in the mouth or on the tongue that is covered with exudate and causes increased salivation. Other clinical manifestations include weight loss, anorexia, fever, fatigue, malaise, dyspnea, cough, night sweats (allergic symptoms), and hemoptysis. (6) Arsenic poisoning Arsenic poisoning usually presents with diarrhea, diffuse skin hyperpigmentation, and edema of the eyelids, face, and ankles; increased salivation is rare. Patients may experience garlic breath, itching, hair loss, irritation of mucous membranes, headache, drowsiness, and confusion. Myalgia, weakness, seizures, and paresthesias in a stocking-glove distribution may also develop. (VII) Drugs Increased salivation can be caused by the toxic effects of iodide. But the initial symptoms are a brassy taste and burning sensation in the mouth and throat. Associated clinical findings include sneezing, eyelid irritation, and (usually) frontal sinus pain. Pilocarpine and other astringents used to treat glaucoma are absorbed systemically and increase saliva secretion. Cholinergic drugs such as carbendazim can also cause this symptom. 8. Mercury poisoning In patients with mercury poisoning, oral inflammation characterized by increased salivation and a metallic taste in the mouth is common. The patient's teeth are loose, and his gums are swollen, painful and prone to bleeding. A blue line may also appear on the gums. People may also experience personality changes, memory loss, crampy abdominal pain, diarrhea, paresthesias, and tremors in the eyelids, lips, tongue, and fingers. |
