Why do I feel dry mouth no matter how much water I drink?

Many people find that no matter how much water they drink, they still feel dry mouth and tongue. In fact, this may be a symptom of Sjögren's syndrome. If you suffer from diabetes, you will also experience dry mouth and thirst.

1. Dry mouth is one of the main symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome. The dryness of the mouth is often unbearable, and even drinking water cannot quench the thirst. The patient has reduced saliva, has great difficulty swallowing dry food, suffers from cracks and pain in the tongue and corners of the mouth, and is prone to tooth decay. About half of the patients have enlarged parotid glands, some have enlarged submandibular glands or nearby lymph nodes, and some have joint pain, most commonly in the elbows and knees. In severe cases, it can cause damage to the renal tubules and lead to dangerous consequences such as arrhythmia. People with Sjögren's syndrome often have a foreign body sensation and burning sensation in their eyes, and their nostrils are dry and prone to scab formation. The diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome is not difficult, but its dry mouth symptoms are often not noticed by patients and doctors, resulting in missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis.

2. Diabetics often have symptoms of dry mouth and thirst. The typical symptoms of clinical diabetes can be summarized as "three mores and one less", namely, drinking more, eating more, urinating more and losing weight. Polyuria includes increased urine volume and increased urination frequency. The total daily urine volume can reach 3 to 5 liters, or even up to 10 liters. Due to frequent urination, the body loses a lot of water, resulting in dry mouth and thirst and a desire to drink more. The amount of water you drink is directly proportional to your blood sugar concentration, urine volume, and the amount of sugar lost in urine. Dry mouth is an early sign of diabetes, but it is often ignored because other symptoms are not typical enough, thus missing the opportunity for early treatment. The diagnosis of diabetes is relatively easy, and high blood sugar is the main basis for diagnosing diabetes. Diabetes can be clearly identified by measuring fasting blood sugar and postprandial blood sugar.

3. Hyperthyroidism (Hyperthyroidism) can also cause dry mouth symptoms. Patients with hyperthyroidism have faster energy metabolism, increased oxygen consumption, increased heat production, and accelerated heat dissipation. Clinical symptoms include dry mouth, sweating, heat intolerance, moist skin with increased temperature, thyroid enlargement, and exophthalmos. Hyperthyroidism has a slow onset, and most patients cannot remember the exact time of onset. In addition, the early symptoms are not obvious, so it is easy for patients to ignore it. However, with the help of laboratory tests of thyroid function in the early stages, a clear diagnosis can be easily obtained.
