What are the symptoms of favism hemolysis

The early symptoms of favism hemolysis include dizziness, fatigue and vomiting, followed by jaundice and hemoglobinuria. As the disease worsens, it may even cause oliguria, anuria and acute renal failure.

Favism hemolysis is mainly a manifestation of erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. It is a hereditary hemolytic disease mainly caused by G-6-PD gene mutation. It is an X-linked incomplete dominant inheritance. It affects males more than females, especially boys under 10 years old.

Hemolytic disease in favism usually occurs after the patient has eaten fresh broad beans or their products, or it may occur after the breastfeeding mother has eaten broad beans. The patient needs to go to the hospital in time for urine routine, blood test and erythrocyte hydantoin body formation test. After the examination, oral sodium bicarbonate medication can be used for treatment, which can keep the urine alkaline and prevent hemoglobin from depositing in the renal tubules.

If the symptoms of hemolytic disease due to favism are severe now, it can also be treated by injection of adrenal cortex hormone, which can play an immunosuppressive role, thereby reducing the hemolytic reaction. After treatment, you need to be careful to avoid eating fresh broad beans and their products. You also need to be cautious when using oxidizing drugs. If other diseases occur, you need to go to the hospital in time to avoid inducing the disease.
