What are the symptoms of favism in babies?

The symptoms of babies with favism are relatively obvious. The incidence of this disease in children is relatively high, especially from March to May each year. After eating broad beans, they are prone to acute illness. Babies with favism will have chills and high fever. In severe cases, they will develop jaundice and fainting, which can easily lead to severe anemia. If rescue is not timely, the child may even die.

What are the symptoms of favism in babies?

The incidence of favism is relatively high in children, and the disease is most common during the broad bean ripening season from March to May each year. The disease usually occurs suddenly 12 to 24 hours after eating broad beans, with symptoms of acute hemolytic crisis: chills, high fever, jaundice, and in severe cases, coma, convulsions, shock, heart failure and acute renal failure. If severe anemia is not treated in time, the patient may die within 1 to 2 days after the onset of the disease. Therefore, when the disease is discovered, you should go to the hospital in time to prevent it from worsening.

The causes of death in children with favism are mostly anemia, severe acidosis, and complications such as acute heart and kidney failure, pneumonia, cerebral parenchymal hemorrhage, etc. Therefore, parents must not take it lightly.

Causes of favism At present, the pathogenic mechanism of favism is not very clear. It is known that sensitive red blood cells with genetic defects cannot provide enough NADPH to maintain the reducing property (antioxidant effect) of reduced glutathione (GSH) due to the defect of G-6-PD. When encountering broad beans and certain factors, the red blood cell membrane is oxidized and a hemolytic reaction occurs. G-6-PD protects normal red blood cells from oxidative damage. Fresh broad beans are very strong oxidants. When G-6-PD is deficient, red blood cells will be destroyed and cause disease.

The other is sex-linked recessive inheritance, and some people also believe it is sex-linked incomplete dominant inheritance, with the mutant gene located on the x chromosome. A variety of active substances can be extracted from broad beans, such as broad bean pyrimidine nucleoside, broad bean pyrimidine, dopa, dopa glycoside and isourea, which are believed to be related to the occurrence of favism.

Favism can be inherited, so children under 3 years old should be cautious when eating broad beans for the first time. If children are found to have low fever, abdominal pain, yellow skin, darker urine, etc. after eating broad beans, they must be sent to a regular hospital for medical treatment immediately. If a child has a history of favism, he or she should not only avoid eating broad beans, but also avoid contact with broad bean pollen, mothballs, gentian violet (gentian violet), and sulfonamides, because these things contain oxidants.
