How to treat favism

How to treat favism

If you have favism, you must receive timely and effective treatment. There are many treatments for favism, the most important of which are Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. When the disease is more serious, Western medicine treatment should be adopted in time. The most common symptom of favism is acute hemolysis, which requires blood transfusion treatment in time. In addition, adrenal cortex hormones can achieve a good immunosuppressive effect, correct the patient's acidosis in a timely manner, and replenish the body's fluids in time.

How to treat favism

1. Treatment of favism by Western medicine:

1. Blood transfusion: This disease is acute hemolysis and severe anemia. Blood transfusion or transfusion of concentrated red blood cells is the most effective treatment measure. In severe cases, blood transfusions may be required repeatedly. However, a rapid screening test for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase should be performed on the blood source to avoid blood supply from people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, which may cause the patient to suffer a second hemolysis.

2. Adrenal cortical hormone: It mainly has immunosuppressive effect, so it should be used early, in large amounts and for a short period of time.

3. Correct acidosis: There are often varying degrees of acidosis during the hemolytic stage of favism. In severe cases, simple blood transfusion is ineffective and should be actively corrected. This is a key measure to rescue critically ill patients.

4. Fluid replacement: Drink more water or take fluids to improve microcirculation, maintain effective blood circulation, and promote kidney acid and hemoglobin excretion, but prevent acute renal failure. When acute renal failure occurs, attention should be paid to maintaining water and electrolyte balance.

5. Symptomatic treatment: If favism is complicated by infection, hemolysis may be aggravated. High fever, hypoxia and increased heart rate may lead to heart failure. Therefore, complications should be actively treated and the use of drugs that are harmful to the kidneys should be avoided.

2. Treatment of favism by traditional Chinese medicine:

Symptoms: Bright yellow body and eyes, fever and thirst, restlessness, nausea and vomiting, abdominal distension, poor appetite, constipation, short and dark urine or soy sauce-colored urine, red tongue, yellow and greasy or yellow and rough tongue coating, and stringy or slippery pulse.

Pathogenesis: After eating broad beans, the poisoning is severe. The poison enters the blood, and the blood and poison fight each other. If the poison is heavy and the blood is prosperous, there will be high fever. The toxic heat damages the liver and gallbladder, causing the liver and gallbladder to lose their ability to secrete, so that the bile does not follow the normal path and overflows on the skin, causing jaundice. Because heat is a yang evil, heat is heavier than dampness, so the body and eyes are bright yellow. Heat evil is strong inside and burns body fluids, causing thirst. Damp heat accumulates in the middle burner and transportation and transformation are abnormal, resulting in poor appetite and less food intake. The stomach loses its harmony and descends, and turbid air invades, causing nausea, vomiting, and restlessness. If the stomach and intestines are hot and the intestines are blocked, there will be fullness in the abdomen and constipation. Damp heat descends and disturbs the bladder, causing qi transformation failure, resulting in short and red urine or soy sauce-colored urine. The tongue is red, the tongue coating is yellow and greasy or yellow and rough, and the pulse is stringy or slippery. This is a sign of damp heat accumulation.

Treatment method: Clear away heat, detoxify, promote dampness and reduce jaundice.

Prescription: Use Yinchen Wuling San with modifications. Medicinal ingredients include 15 grams of Artemisia capillaris, 12 grams of Poria cocos, 10 grams of Poria cocos, 10 grams of Alisma orientalis, 12 grams of Atractylodes macrocephala, 15 grams of Scutellaria baicalensis, 12 grams of Gardenia jasminoides, 18 grams of Isatis root, 10 grams of Curcuma aromatica, and 6 grams of Licorice.

Add or subtract: For constipation, add rhubarb and immature bitter orange; for severe vomiting, add pinellia and bamboo shavings.
