What causes clogged pores and closed comedones?

Closed comedones with clogged pores are a relatively common type of acne, also known as whitehead acne. This type of acne is relatively difficult to treat and the condition is stubborn, especially for the face. There are many causes of closed comedones, such as internal factors, endocrine disorders, excessive secretion of male hormones, and external factors mainly include not paying attention to skin cleansing, using inferior cosmetics, etc.

What causes clogged pores and closed comedones?

Acne is often described as a "symbol of youth", and teenagers are the most troubled by it. Excessive secretion of sebum can cause pores to become clogged, which in turn becomes the cause of acne. Acne often appears in the "T-zone" such as the hairline and forehead and nose where sebum secretion is high.

1. Internal factors: 1. Excessive secretion of androgen: It is the main reason for the formation of closed comedones. Especially during adolescence, excessive secretion of androgen in males and females is the main cause of acne. Androgens can directly stimulate the increase of sebaceous glands, promote the keratinization of hair follicles, clog the pores and cause inflammation, resulting in the formation of acne and pimples. 2. Related to women’s menstrual cycle: For some women, acne worsens before menstruation. It is mainly related to changes in hormone secretion. 3. Internal diseases or functional disorders of the body: lesions of organs such as the stomach, kidneys, and liver, especially gastrointestinal dysfunction and constipation can induce the formation of closed comedones. 4. Mental stress, excessive fatigue, lack of sleep, etc. 5. Overeating greasy, spicy and sour foods and sweets.

2. External factors: 1. Improper cleaning: causes pores to be clogged and bacterial infection causes closed comedones. 2. Squeezing, picking, and improper needle picking: Some people squeeze acne and cause bacterial infection. 3. Use inferior cosmetics, such as dual-purpose powder, foundation, etc. 4. Ultraviolet rays and certain chemicals, etc. The main causes of closed comedones are the ones introduced above. We need to take preventive measures in our daily lives to address the causes of the disease. Proper skin cleansing, regular exfoliation, use of appropriate skin care products, adequate and regular sleep, avoidance of sun exposure, and eating less or no spicy or fried foods can effectively prevent the occurrence of closed comedones.
