What to do if your eyelids become dry, flaky, red, and itchy

Sometimes people may suddenly find that the skin around their eyes has become dry, flaky, red, swollen and itchy. This is especially common in the summer. Of course, it does not only occur in the summer. It may also occur in other seasons. After all, there are many reasons for redness, swelling and itching of the eyelids. What should you do if your eyelids become dry, flaky, red, swollen and itchy? People can first understand the specific reasons and then look for corresponding solutions.

Common causes of redness, swelling, itching and peeling around the eyes include allergies of the skin around the eyes and sun exposure. If the condition does not improve due to trauma, psoriasis, neurodermatitis, etc., seek medical attention promptly to avoid worsening of the condition.

1. Allergies

The skin around the eyes is relatively delicate and fragile compared to other parts of the body, and is susceptible to allergies, especially in spring when pollen is diffused in the air. People with allergic constitution or decreased immunity are prone to allergies on the skin around the eyes, resulting in redness, swelling and itching around the eyes, and peeling in severe cases.

2. Exposure to the sun

The sun has a strong irritating effect on the skin, and the skin on the face is not protected. The skin on the nose, eyes, forehead, etc. is relatively delicate and fragile, and is easily burned by the sun. The skin around the eyes becomes red, swollen, and peels. If it is infected by fungi, itching symptoms will occur.

3. Neurodermatitis

Some patients simply experience itching, redness, and peeling of the eyelids, which may not be a general allergic reaction, but more likely to be neurodermatitis, one of the more common skin diseases in clinical practice.

4. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common infectious disease among human skin diseases. This type of disease can be caused by fungal, bacterial and viral infections. It feeds on proteins in the skin and proliferates rapidly, causing redness, itching and peeling of the skin.

5. Trauma

The skin is the body's first line of defense and is also the most vulnerable line of defense. The skin around the eyes is very fragile and easily scratched. The skin has self-healing capabilities, but trauma may lead to infection, local itching, redness and swelling, and scarring and peeling during the recovery process.

Some patients have flaky and itchy eyelids because their skin is too dehydrated. If the patient has symptoms due to this reason, he can drink more water and use some moisturizing skin care products to replenish his skin with sufficient moisture. After persisting for a period of time, the symptoms of peeling and itching will subside on their own.
