Gallstones are hard deposits of bile that can get stuck in the gallbladder and bile ducts and can cause acute or chronic gallbladder inflammation. If gallstones cause severe pain and other complications, your surgeon will remove your gallbladder. While severe gallbladder pain can lead to paralysis, if the pain is mild, there are some things you can do to relieve the pain at home. If gallbladder pain is severe from the beginning, the only option is to treat the underlying cause of the pain. Next, we will teach you how to relieve all types of gallbladder pain and achieve quick pain relief. 1 Use a heating element or heating pad. For immediate relief, apply a hot water bottle, heating pad, or other heat pack in your stomach directly over your gallbladder. The heat should help relieve the pain. It is recommended to apply the heating pad every 20 - 30 minutes, leaving a layer of cloth between the heating pad and the skin to prevent burns. If you don't have a heating pad or heat pack, you can also try soaking in a hot bath. 2 Try pain relievers. In most cases, you can take an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen to help relieve the pain quickly. Avoid taking NSAIDs unless advised by your doctor. These over-the-counter medications can upset your stomach and ultimately make your gallbladder pain worse. A pain reliever with anti-inflammatory properties is best, as it can reduce your pain while also limiting the level of inflammation in your gallbladder. 3 Drink some vegetable juice. An unproven home remedy is to mix beet juice, carrot juice, and cucumber juice in equal proportions. Drink this mixture twice a day for two weeks. [ 1 ] All three of these vegetables help remove toxins from the body. Whether this is true or not, some people swear by this medicine, insisting that it relieves gallbladder pain slightly after digestion, gradually eliminating the pain after a few weeks. 4 Turn to citrus. The pectin in citrus fruits and juices is thought to help relieve gallbladder pain caused by blockage or stones. Lemon juice is particularly effective. Squeeze the juice of four lemons and drink it on an empty stomach. Note that this should be 8 to 12 tablespoons (120 to 180 ml) of juice. Do this every day for about a week, then drink a glass of water. 5 Try herbs. There are many different herbs that are thought to help relieve gallbladder pain. You can take herbal supplements orally in pill form, or you can make a tea by mixing four or five leaves of your chosen herb with boiling water. Herbs that may help relieve pain include St. John's wort, white veratrum, rosemary, dandelion, goldenrod, goldenseal, chicory, calendula, wild yam, garlic, catnip, nettle, barberry bark, fennel seed, ginger, goldenrod, and milk thistle. [ 2 ] Chamomile and mint herbal teas may also help relieve pain and dissolve any stones that are causing the pain, but it may take 4 to 6 weeks to see significant results. 6 Mix turmeric and honey. The curcumin in turmeric is supposed to help make bile in the gallbladder more soluble, while the honey has antiseptic properties that help prevent infection and aggravation. If you decide to use turmeric, mix 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of honey with 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of turmeric and consume it once daily. To avoid eating turmeric but still get the benefits of curcumin, take a 300 mg curcumin supplement instead. [ 3 ] 7 Drink some apple cider vinegar. The acidic properties of apple cider vinegar can quickly relieve gallbladder pain, even providing significant relief within 15 minutes. If you have difficulty with the taste of apple cider vinegar, mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) into an 8-ounce (250-ml) glass of apple juice and drink it. However, if you have a higher tolerance for the taste, you can try drinking 1/4 cup (60 ml) of apple cider vinegar followed by 8 ounces (250 ml) of apple juice for faster relief. [ 4 ] 8 Drink salt water. Mixing coarse salt in a glass of warm water and drinking it before bed can help relieve gallbladder pain. For best results, use epsom or sea salt. Do not use table salt. Mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of salt into 8 ounces (250 ml) of warm water until dissolved. drink wine. 9 Try a castor oil press. Placing a rag soaked in pure castor oil directly on the gallbladder is said to help relieve gallbladder pain quickly and significantly. Castor oil is believed to help neutralize inflammation and provide relief when used topically. Soak a clean rag in cold-pressed castor oil, beating out any excess before use. Place the rag on your exposed skin, covering the painful gallbladder. For more effective results, place the plastic over the rag and place a hot water bottle over it. Apply the castor oil compress to your skin for 30 minutes for maximum relief. |
