Normal values of glucose tolerance test during pregnancy

Normal values of glucose tolerance test during pregnancy
During pregnancy, it is very important to do a glucose tolerance test. By checking the glucose tolerance of pregnant women, we can better understand the physical condition of the pregnant women and determine whether they have gestational diabetes. The amount of diabetes during pregnancy, whether too high or too low, will have a great impact on pregnant women and fetuses. If it is not adjusted in time, it will lead to problems such as premature birth of pregnant women and giant fetuses. So, what is the normal value for diabetes urine test during pregnancy? The following will give you a detailed introduction.

1. Normal values of glucose tolerance test for pregnant women

Normally, blood sugar concentration rises rapidly within 1/2 to 1 hour after taking sugar, and returns to the fasting level after 2 hours. If it does not return to normal levels 2 hours after taking sugar and the urine sugar is positive, it means impaired glucose tolerance.

Normal value of blood glucose tolerance for pregnant women (75g OGCT):

1. Fasting blood sugar. Normal value range: ≤5.1mmol/L

2. 1 hour blood sugar. Normal value range: ≤10.0mmol/L

3. 2-hour blood sugar. Normal value range: ≤8.5mmol/L

Abnormal risk: If the value of any of the above three items reaches or exceeds the critical value, gestational diabetes can be diagnosed.

Methods of glucose tolerance test

1. Before the examination, the daily carbohydrate intake should be no less than 150g and normal physical activity should be carried out for at least 3 days.

2. Fast for 10-14 hours overnight.

3. Do not drink alcohol, coffee or tea before the examination and keep your emotions stable.

4. Draw blood on an empty stomach before 8:30 am, then drink 250-300 ml of water containing 75 grams of glucose within 5 minutes (if fasting blood sugar > 15.0mmol/L or if you have type 1 diabetes and are prone to ketosis, replace it with 100 grams of flour buns, which should be eaten within 10-15 minutes).

5. Draw blood once at 0.5 hour, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours after drinking sugar water or eating steamed buns to measure blood sugar levels.

3. Clinical significance of glucose tolerance test

The significance of pregnant women undergoing glucose tolerance tests during pregnancy is to diagnose diabetes, understand the range of blood sugar fluctuations, and analyze the stability of diabetes.

It should be noted that the blood sugar level of pregnant women with gestational diabetes after delivery will be somewhat different from that of normal people. The World Health Organization (WHO) diagnostic criteria for diabetes are:

1. Have symptoms of diabetes. Diabetes can be diagnosed if any of the following conditions are met: ① fasting blood glucose ≥ 7.8mmol/L; ② blood glucose ≥ 11.1mmol/L at any time of the day; ③ fasting blood glucose < 7.8mmol/L, but blood glucose > 11.1mmol/L 2 hours after an oral 75g glucose tolerance test.

2. No symptoms of diabetes. Diabetes can be diagnosed if any of the following conditions are met: ① Two fasting blood glucose levels ≥ 7.8mmol/L; ② Blood glucose levels at 1 and 2 hours after the first 75g oral glucose tolerance test are both ≥ 11.1mmol/L, blood glucose levels at 2 hours after a repeated glucose tolerance test are ≥ 11.1mmol/L, or fasting blood glucose levels are ≥ 7.8mmol/L after a repeated fasting blood glucose test.

3. Impaired glucose tolerance. Fasting blood glucose <7.8mmol/L, blood glucose between 7.8 and 11.1mmol/L 2 hours after oral administration of 75g of glucose.

The diagnosis of gestational diabetes refers to the above standards. The fetus of a diabetic pregnancy often suffers from congenital malformations before 7 weeks of embryonic development, so early diagnosis and treatment before pregnancy is very important.
