Pharyngitis is a disease caused by bacteria and is divided into acute pharyngitis and chronic pharyngitis. Acute pharyngitis is often caused by viruses or bacteria. It is most common in winter and spring. It is often secondary to acute rhinitis, acute sinusitis, and acute tonsillitis. Chronic pharyngitis is mainly caused by repeated attacks of acute pharyngitis due to incomplete treatment, which turns into a chronic disease, or by nasal obstruction, long-term mouth breathing, physical and chemical factors, neck radiotherapy, etc. that stimulate the pharynx.

Cause details: 1. Virus infection. Viral infections are transmitted through droplets and close contact, and are caused by coxsackievirus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza virus.

2. Bacterial infection. Pharyngitis is the most common cause and causes severe pain: followed by rhinovirus, influenza virus, etc. Bacterial infections are mainly caused by streptococci, staphylococci and pneumococci. Among them, those caused by group A beta streptococci are the most serious. Bacteria or toxins enter the blood, or even purulent lesions in distant organs occur, which is called acute septic pharyngitis.

3. Physical and chemical factors. Physical and chemical factors such as high temperature, dust, smoke, irritating gas, etc.

symptom

1. Acute pharyngitis: often caused by viruses, followed by bacteria. It is most common in winter and spring. It is often secondary to acute rhinitis, acute sinusitis, acute tonsillitis, and is often a complication of infectious diseases such as measles, influenza, and scarlet fever. In adults, the main symptoms are in the pharynx. At the beginning of the disease, the pharynx will feel dry, itchy, and burning, and gradually become painful. The pain worsens when swallowing, and the saliva increases. If the lateral pharyngeal cord is affected, there will be obvious ear pain. Symptoms of pharyngitis in weak adults or children are obvious systemic symptoms, including fever, chills, headache, loss of appetite, and sore limbs.

2. Chronic pharyngitis: It is mainly due to repeated attacks of acute pharyngitis due to incomplete treatment, turning into a chronic disease, or due to various nasal diseases, nasal obstruction, long-term mouth breathing, physical, chemical factors, neck radiotherapy, etc. that often stimulate the pharynx. The patient feels discomfort in the throat, which may be dry, itchy, or swollen, with excessive secretions and burning pain, nausea, a foreign body sensation, and difficulty in coughing up or swallowing. The above symptoms worsen when talking a lot, eating irritating foods, feeling tired, or when the weather changes. Breathing and swallowing are unobstructed.

3. Chronic simple laryngitis. The laryngeal mucosa is diffusely congested and swollen, the vocal cords lose their original pearly white color and become pink, the edges become blunt, and thick mucus can be seen on the surface of the mucosa, often forming mucus threads between the glottis.

4. Hypertrophic laryngitis. The laryngeal mucosa is thickened, especially in the interarytenoid region. The vocal cords are also thickened and cannot move toward the midline, resulting in poor closure. The ventricular zone is often thickened and covers part of the vocal cords, and the aryepiglottic folds may also be thickened.

5. Atrophic laryngitis. The laryngeal mucosa is dry, thin and shiny, and there are often yellow-green or dark brown dry scabs in the interarytenoid area and under the glottis. If the scabs are coughed out, a small amount of blood can be seen on the surface of the mucosa. Thinning of the vocal cords. Its tension decreases.
